Okay folks so...I just picked up a set of wheels (Incurve IC-S10, 20x9 +35) and need to get my suspension next. I have been set on BC Coilovers for a while, but a friend told me going air isn't going to be much more expensive. So...for those in the know...

1) What's more reliable? Air or coilovers?
2) How is the comfort on air vs coils for THESE chasis car?
3) How complex/hard to install are these air systems?
4) Who makes a system for an AWD Y51?

As a tease, here is the wheels photoshopped on my car with a drop (whatever it ends up being):

Did you buy the set from ChinkyChoy on myG37? I was eyeing that set up lol! You have to PM me the price you paid for them because it was either the wheels or a TV lol. You'll have to let me know what the fitment is like.

Anyways, back to your question, with the little bit I know about the air suspension, I know that the air suspension itself can be made of soft materials, which means they can be punctured on the road, leaving you with a slammed (and undrivable) corner. I also know that you need an air compressor and a controller installed. So imagine running tubing from the air compressor (most likely mounted in your trunk) and the involvement of running tubing to all 4 corners. The controller will be mounted up front by you. Raising and lowering at will are obviously pros. Also the nice thing about air suspensions are that they're somewhat universal so a kit will work from one model to another. Not sure about the comfort of these things. I wouldn't even compare these for performance. They are expensive. I would venture to guess upwards of $3K.

On the other hand, your only coilover option for AWD are BC coilovers, which can be iffy as far as noise-free/problem-free operation. And they cost only $1K new, less if you can get them used. You could also go with a cup kit and coilovers, which puts you in the full air price range. Cup kits are air kits that sit on top of the spring perch of a coilover and you can raise and lower them as needed to get over steep bumps and driveways. The ones that I've seen are usually made out of aluminum, so they cannot puncture while driving like air kits can. They're not meant to be driven on a raised state. BPVIP was on a cup kit but I guess he's planning on going full air.

Sorry for the XXL post.

No I did't, lol. I got them new from Incurve. I went with 20x9 +35 because he told me (former G owner) that 20x10.5 +45 wouldn't fit in the front.

I had BC's on my 2007. Other than my sway bar links blowing every 5k (did alignments, etc.), I had no other issues. All my noises came from those going bad. The coilovers themselves were fine which is why I'm okay with getting them for this car.

But yeah, if bags (full air or cup) were $1.5k as opposed to $1k for coilovers I might have been inclined to put in the work...but if they are indeed $2k more than coilovers on average, that's way too rich for my blood.

I just did a quick search and I found manual air kits around $1700. I don't know what kind of manual adjustments are involved. Digital kits are going around $2700 or more. AirRex is about $5K (O.O)

Yeah, way too much for me. Almost double the price. Looks like BC's it is, lol.

I am curious about the wheels though...I'd love to get the 10.5's...get that concave look.

I was going to say that your friend lied to you because air is significantly more expensive than coils lol.

You can probably run 10.5 with the right offset, possibly some negative camber and some fender pulling. I didn't want to steer you the wrong way, but it seems like it would require a little work.

I know some people are against it but I love the look of staggered fitment and the general consensus is that it doesn't negatively affect AWD systems as long as the rolling diameter is within 1% front to back.

I had BC's on my 07. Didn't hate them, but the stabilizer links issue was annoying. Hopefully I don't have that on this car.

Do you know how much the new rims weigh each?

Check your tracking number of the shipment if you're not sure, it'll display the weight of the items shipped.

32Lbs is what's on the labels. I haven't gotten them yet. Middle man hasn't shipped them and the wheel owner is trying to find another way of getting them to me.

I thought they were great. Mine were blowing the stabilizer links on my 2007 M35x, but otherwise I had no issues with them.
