How do coilovers work? I would like to know how you install and adjust coilovers to lower your car? I have a 97 Q45t with 18 inch rims and I want just a little bit lower stance. If I change the springs or get some coilovers I should be able to do that, right? Coilovers are very expensive though and I want to just go with springs but I wonder what I would be missing since the q45t springs are supposed to be stiffer for better performance. I thought it would be interesting to have an updated discussion on this cause a slightly lowered Q45 just looks so good!

Springs have very little to do with handling performance they hold the body up and set ride height.I suggest you read a few thousand previous posts since 2002 where these things have been discussed and discussed and discussed and discussed in minute detail.

A good textbook on suspension designs and modifications always helps.http://search.barnesandnoble.c...86495

It does help to periodically funnel all the common knowledge into a concise thread that relates to a certain generation Q45. Like the second generation FGY33 Q45.

A valid point, but some here thrive on hazing, chest thumping and intolerance. You got off easy as the reigning Hazing Czar is currently on administrative leave and at the Betty Ford Clinic. ObiWanQnobie tossed you a softball!

There is a ton of stuff available IF you can get the search function to work.....sometimes it's perfect, at other times it's INOP.

Any rate, welcome to the MOSH pit. Grab some rocks and learn to throw back, it's half the fun and therapeutic!

Respectfully submitted,Douglas C. NiedermeyerSargeant at Arms.

Pretty much all 4 wheel vehicles utilize springs in the same way to hold up body and make the ride tolerable.

Once you know the weight of vehicle sprung and unsprung, the tire sidewall stiffness, you can select the correct spring for a specific road speed.

All in all street vehicles have a COMMON minimum rideheight [clearance from oil pan to ground] for a definite purpose. Reducing the oil pan to ground distance can have very expensive consequences SINCE we have no control over road hazards.

BEWARE of people who make their living selling aftermarket components to uneducated [on engineering design] owners . They will often promise you everything and deliver nothing but a failed oil pan or other component.

Obviously professional racing is a different area but they hire engineers to reoptimize things for minute improvements.
