coilover recomendations

im looking into getting a set of coilovers for my z33, drift and some everyday street use is the main purpose of my car. there are lots of great companies out there but im having trouble deciding who i want to go with.

Yeah, I've been wondering for a while too.

Had a discussion with a bud of mine earlier, says tein is wayy overpriced.

Ill just sit and wait for people to chime in.

ya tein is expensive but if it is worth it i dont mind. thought about trying jicmagic and also have been looking into greddy. i know i'll be happy with whatever i get compared to stock but eventually i wanna use my z as a full on track car

the question should be prefaced by what you expect form a set of coil overs, if you just want the car lowered, the cheapest set you can find will do the trick, if you you care about performance then there are many options, but they will very on what kind fo performance you want, you can get coil overs with stock spring rates so the handling is more similar to stock, and of course spring rates are limitless deopending on your needs but you need a shock that can handle the rates you intend to run, if you're a racer then rebuildable shocks with if custom valving is important such as Koni, Carerra, ADS, etc

tien flex with EDFS. My friend has it on his G35. I'm seriously considering buying it.

im looking for all out performance the main purpose of my z is to be a drift car once i finish paying it off which wont be much longer, its not my main source of transportation so an agressive set up will not be a drivability issue. once i get my suspension set up im gonna supercharge it i know turbos make more peak hp but i like having boost all over the powerband thats going off my personal experience. until my z i have always had camaros and mustangs so im still learning em.

i do have some pics of my 86 but it is under going some serious work it does not look to pretty right now.right now its a hull i been getting it ready to paint inside and out. haha to get a good idea i paid 300 bucks for it from a junk yard

actually thsi is an oxymoron, perfromance implies fast which in turns involves traction, drifting is the opoeite, it's all about loosing traction, if you are spinning tires you are wasting energy, which is what drift is about, if you want to drift you want the stiffect shocks you can find with the heaviest spring, I'd guess around 600 lbs/in or higher, especially the rear, I imagine you want to keep the dront from sexceding the slip angle so the fronts wyou'll want valves and spring more softly than the rear

For drifting purposes tien also makes the super drift series, which is also compatible with the edfs. Edfs provides you an option to adjust the stiffness of each shock in real time. Four small motors is installed to your coilovers which lets you set 32 levels of stiffness remotely from inside the car. I believe it also alllows you to preset multiple settings. This caught my attention because I can drive my car straight to the track without having to jack it up, take the wheels off, to adjust to track settings.

I stand corrected...The only con i hear about this is that the motor will does go out eventually, but the good thing is that tien has distribution facilities around the US. So if it F's up, replacement or repair is conveniently available.

I'm a HUGE fan of stance - love them for the 240, that's what I'll be running as soon as I sell one of my 240's.

Without disrespect.... Tein is the absolute junkiest of the junk. The valving is so bad and mismatched to the spring rates. I had a buddy dyno a set of his Tein's and the guy who owned the shock dyno'd said they were the worst set of shocks he had ever seen. If you want cheap go with something from BC Racing, or Stance. If you want quality go with something From Zeal, Koni, Penske, MOTON, or KW.

I hate to point this out but a spring is a spring so long as it is the free lenght and rate you want, a tein 12" 400 lb/in srping is not better or worese than a GC, or Carerra, or Eibach or any other company

k sport has some drift spec coilovers for 1,237 which is not a bad price. may try them but i have not heard much feed back on em.
