Your mechanic probably got a PO305
It is the toughest code to diagnose
If you have Chilton's they describe how to multimeter the coils better than the FSM
You will want to put them in the freezer to get them cold and check them hot as well
I have tied a coat hanger wire to a grounded place on my car and started the engine
with the coil pack with a known good spark plug open to your vision
See if you get a well defined blue spark to ark accross the coat hanger
If so the coil is probably good
