coil melt down:(

hy there! i have a 300zx n/a auto 2+2.it would run for abouth 15 minute and then shutdown, i was told that it my be the ptu so i got the update, and put it.when i turn the engine i notice tha one cylender wasnt working while looking for the one that wasnt working a weird smell came out and it was a coil that was melting or burning . i dont know what happen or what i did wrong can someone help out .

That's sometimes the sign of a shorted wire. Have the wires on the front of the engine ever been hit by the fan? If they aren't secured properly this can happen.

it is possible for a cop to go bad and meltdown, unusual but possible, try replacing the coil and see if it persists

i had the same problem with my old n/a .. the inner coil turned to like a liquid plastic and ooozed out ahah but any way i just ended up changing it and it was fine

could also be a bad ptu, the transistor for that channel could be stuck int he closed position and burn up the cop, but the ptu normally fails open
