I have two Rogues and need to purchase a code reader. I know it is an obd ii but does it need to have the CAN ability to read my 2009 Rogues? If anyone can comment a the purchase of a make and model code reader that works well please help me out.

Yes, you need a code reader that is CAN BUS compatible. It was mandated for all MY2008 and newer vehicles sold in North America.

Just about any CAN BUS code reader should work as the scan tools are pretty much standardized now. I would still check with the tool mfg to see if the vehicle is supported though.

Philip, do you happen to know if the rogue provides a transmission temp read out as a default values?

Monitoring values is done through PID (parameter identification numbers). There are some standard ones, but there are proprietary ones that vary between mfg's. Off hand, I do not know if Nissan has published a PID code for the transmission fluid temp sensor.

List of standard PID's from ScanGuage.com:

You will have to contact the individual scan tool mfg to see it can retrieve the PID code... if it's even available. I imagine some of the simpler scan tools will just read diagnostic codes and nothing else.

This is a pretty complex subject, good luck with it!

After more research, the enhanced Nissan PID's do not appear to be public domain. That means some aftermarket scan tools and software may not be able to read the transmission temps. Some scan tool mfg's may have an arrangement or some sort of licensing to retrieve this information. IMHO, I would carefully investigate the scan tool you are purchasing to see if it's capable

Hi Guys, You hi-jacked my thread. I need to know if anyone used a code scanner on a 2009 Nissan Rogue and if they liked the results it which one did they use. Please let me put my question out and get an answer before you turn the thread in a different direction. Thanks

Very few if any of our members have used scan tools. The Scangauge II is the only one I've seen mentioned here in the past 2.5 years.

Try posting your question in our Nissan Online Mechanic Section to see if someone more knowledgeable can help you:
