My 2001 QX4 did not start one morning, the same day i was going to take it in for an oil change. The starter clicked rapidly but the engine did not start....About an hour later, I tried it again and it did start, although alittle sluggishly...My mechanic checked my battery and said it needed to be replaced...My check engine light was also on...He did a diagnosis and Code P1612 came up which meant my keys need to be recalibrated with the car's security system. My mechanic said he could do it for about $150....Since my battery was only about 2 years old, rather than buy a new one from the mechanic, I took my car to the after market retailer who tested the battery and gave me a pro-rata credit against buying a new one...Now that that issue is resolved, I am now wondering if the P1612 code was due soley to the faulty battery and whether I still need to have my keys re-programmed...The car seems to be starting up fine now.

I also have a slight oil leak from the engine oil pan...Apparently I need a new gasket...My mechanic replacing he gasket would require a couple of hours labor....Is that about right?

I would appreciate any advice readers may have on these issues...Thanks.

did you physically see this leak yourself? or is it what your mechanic claims? If you dont mind getting on the ground and a little dusty, take a gander under your SUV see where its actually leaking from. I do know that R50's have a tendancy to leak from the oil cooler area and its like a 5 dollar part or even simply tightening a bolt.

As for your key issue, try it out for a couple weeks if the problem comes up again then do the key calibration (although i doubt you need it)

Thanks Innovazn - I had noticed the oil on the ground and asked the mechanic to check it out when doing the oil change....I did not check myself to see where it was leaking from and will try and do so.

Where exactly is the oil cooler area? is it obvious to see from the ground?

During and after an oil change when an oil filter is also changed there is a possibility of a mess on the roadway, driveway etc. as the residual oil removed from the oil filter especially leaks onto the sub frame and cross members and most mechanics do not wipe this oil up or do a lousy job in wiping up so as time passes and you park in about the same place it looks like you have an oil leak.

You do, but not from the engine or engine related parts. The leak is all the residual oils coming down from the cross members, covers, and pieces of hardware under the car that happen to catch the dribbles of oil from mainly the filter.

It's a dirty job. It requires you to go under that dirty raised up car. Then with a wiper, clean everything. NO WONDER WHY MECHANICS DO NOT WANT TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEMSELVES. An oil/filter change takes time and then cleaning up takes time.

Many of us do all kinds of tricks to make less of a mess, but you will have to check for yourself or have a reliable trustworthy person check to see that the oil pan gasket is really leaking and if it is it must be tightened, wiped clean and observed for a while unless the leak is caused by missing parts, ripped parts of the gasket or a real loose pan.

You will need clothes that can get dirty
A bright light to see
A couple but at least a single ramp to drive up and raise the front.
DO NOT GO UNDER A JACKED UP CAR UNLESS IT IS ON SAFETY STANDS
Rags

If this is the first time under a car have someone with you.

Take note if youre small framed (like my self , 5'11 150lb slim asian) you can scramble under there with no issues

As for the oil cooler, its right at the front. ( reference post5932823.html?hilit=cooler#p5932823 and oil-leak-but-cant-locate-t457339.html <<"simple" walk through discussion)

Drop front skid plate and take a look on the passenger side
Should be just past CV boot and youll see alot of "sludge" and oil all over the area
From there youll find the part shown in the 2 posts. If it looks clean with none of the oil sludge in the area
move on to the oil pan and follow ARK's instructions.

I'm 6' 5", 205 pounds and I can get under there without jacking the truck.

And note that stick shift 3.5L do not have an oil cooler.
