My 2001 QX4 is throwing off a P1131 code. From what I am reading here, it seems to be related to something called a swirl control valve solenoid. I looking through the posts, photos have been shown of a green valve near the front of the engine and some sort of black tank next to it. That does NOT appear to be what is on my vehicle. I find the green valve/solenoid but instead of a tank next to it, I have another valve that is brown in color and, other than the color, looks exactly like the green one. Does the QX4 have two swirl valves? AM I looking in the right place? If this is the case, any idea on how I tell which one has the problem? I would attached a photo but I don't see where to do so.

Another question, how does one remove the stupid green electrical plugs?

Please provide the manufacturing date of your QX4; this can be found on the driver door jamb sticker.

There is no P1131 code. Do you mean P1130?

The swirl control valve solenoid's location is depicted on page EC-459 of the factory service manual. For instructions on removing the green harness connectors, see page EL-6 of the factory service manual.

I see the green valve that is identified in the illustration. What is the brown valve next to it that looks identical except for the color? (Same shape and same number of vac hoses going to it).

As for the code, my OBII is calling it 1131. I've seen other posts here for others receiving the same code. I have a generic code reader and using Torque program to read them.

Manufacture date is 4/00. Its a 2001 QX4

The 2001 PF FSM does not contain code P1131 anywhere, either in the Engine Control section, or elsewhere. 2001 QX4 should be identical. What was the build date on your PF?

Build date is 4/00 for my 2001 QX4. Code reader definitely gives me P1131, but let's say its P1130 which points to the Swirl Valve. I can replace that valve easy enough. Can anyone tell me what the brown valve next to the green swirl valve is? Other than color, it looks exactly like the swirl valve and has the same vac hose connections.

According to EC-23, it is the VIAS control solenoid valve.

Your 04/00 QX4 is a 2001.0 model year; you can download the entire factory service manual here.

I was about to suggest trying a different code reader, but Googled

p1131 nissan pathfinder

and it appears that even though it's not in the FSM, it does happen. The Google hits may shed some light.

Googling it only gets more confusing. Other than on this forum, when i search for P1131, it come up as "P1131- Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1" but it basically comes up with that for P1130 as well which on a Nissan is the Swirl Valve solenoid. I believe that definition is more generic and not specific to Nissan. Others on this forum seem to believe that P1131 is the swirl valve solenoid as well and have had success with replacing it and/or cleaning the vac tubes leading to it.

Anyone here with more knowledge than me agree with this? I'm having smog related issues on two vehicles at the moment and I'd like to be able to solve at least one of them.

The 2003 and 2004 FSMs do include P1131, and it is a Swirl Control Valve Control Solenoid Valve thing. I'd follow that procedure.

I don't get by here very often because my QX4 is pretty much flawless right now (knock on wood trim). But I had that problem and solved it here:

post6517435.html?hilit=swirl#p6517435

Indeed it was the swirl control valve solenoid valve and I have pictures in my thread showing where it is. The FSM is confusing in that it suggests several other (expensive) fixes that it MIGHT be. Unfortunately, the dealer sometimes interprets the FSM wrongly and installs all these other things w/o replacing the Swirl Control Valve. I found the part online (part numbers in my thread) and fixed it first time.

If you need any help, send me a message and I think it will come to my email. If I don't reply my email address is stephejl at live dot com.
