hello everyone, this is my first post... please help me (stuck)

just replaced head gasket, water pump, timing chain, guides etc... now i get this code p0340. I have set the timing to TDC of compression stroke, inserted the distributer following pictures from the chiltons manual and online info from alldata.com...

Anyways when i try to start after everything is in its place, i get a quick studder, then nothing,.... just motor turning over....

i have adjusted the distributer with a friend while key is turned, i have double checked the wiring.. could the chain be off a notch?

any info/ideas are very appreciated

it is most likely a bad distributor. you can test that the black wire (on the big dist connector) has ground and the black with white wire has power. the other two are signal wires to the ecm. pull out the dist and spin it over with the ign on. if you hear the injectors and stuff clicking then its working.

yeah the distributor is working, we tested this as well.

(the dry motor was running and had compression before the work was done...) so i doubt any of these parts are just bad

P0340 +bad signal from crank angle sensor. The crank angle sensor is located inside the distributor under the plate below the rotor. Check your connector make sure it is firmly seated and has no moisture in it, if that checks ok you probably have a bad distributor.

well i found out why it wouldn't start, i guess the camshaft chain was off by one link... possibly cause the tensioners had no pressure yet?

now it ran pretty good, set the timing to 20deg btdc, .... although about an hour later driving it, the car started to surge/studder eventually stalling..... ?

i restarted it again about an hour later and it was smooth, then after a few mins it started to studder again. What should i do?

Then something electronic is breaking down when it gets hot. Are you still getting the same code po340?

not sure, i will check tomorrow.

Another thing, i have bosch plugs.... could this be a factor? maybe i should have just gone with the ngk's

to be more specific (the motor ran smooth, 3 hours later.. started an intermittent surge/tremor/and sometimes stalling at idle.. even a hesitation when giving it some gas...)
