I recently pulled the codes from my 94 Q and it read 34 Knock sensor and 53 exhaust gas sensor (LH). My car has 87K miles and I had the KS done at 81K (2 yrs ago). I was wondering if these were just stored codes or if there may still be a problem.

I read on some posts about the KS harness, but could not tell if it could cause a code. Also, I only found 1 post on the EGS. What is this and what type of malfunction does it cause?

Was the harness replaced when the KS were?

I presume the EGS is an O2 Sensor?

So, is it running poorly, or ar eyou just worreid about the codes? If hte battery wasn't disconnected and you didn't use a Consult I, then I would bet the codes are stored.

Don't know if the harness was replaced, very doubtful. Don't think the battery was disconnected either. The car is running poorly ( worse than before the EGR,IAC,TB,MAF cleaning, New air filter and 2 tanks of BG44K)

Don't know what the EGS is Maybe it is just the left side O2 sensor.

Did you check their work? Don't know why they wouldn't use a new harness. Nor why the under plenum hoses weren't replaced with new ones when they were removed. OEM KS?

Check the car on the rack. Maybe just be a loose lead to the O2 sensor. but if original, probably best to replace both.

Clear the codes with Consult and see if they return.

Unfortunately, all this was done prior to my discovery of NICO, otherwise I would have done it myself. I did ohm the injectors today and found that all were at 11.5 except inj. 1 which was at 17.6. I also did the ks and if I did it right, I got a reading from two prongs that was 560.

The KS were oem, but the guy who did them was not an inf. mechanic. I will be going to his shop tomorrow to find out exactly what he did and did not replace so I can purchase all the missing link parts.

I now wonder if I should also purchase inj. 1? I'm pretty certain that the O2 sensors are original (I've had the car since 51K).

I'm also trying to get my hands on a Consult. The mech. I know used a Snap-on computer to diag.

It's your lucky day. Injector #1 is easy to replace and your Q will run a lot better when you replace the bad injector. Pulling the ECU codes (and clearing the codes) is very easy. Here's the thread explaining it:

zerothread?id=134016

The ECU is behind the PS kick panel. Look for about a 1" square flap near where your right foot would be if you stretched out in the passenger seat. Remove this nut and the kick panel comes out revealing the ECU. If you are mechanically inclined check your codes yourself. If you're not mechanically inclined check the codes yourself anyway. It's very easy, nothing more than "righty tighty, lefty loosey". You'll need a phillips and standard screwdrivers and a 12mm socket or open end wrench. You'll get a lot of satisfaction from doing it yourself.

I would start by 1) replacing #1 injector, 2) clearing the codes (leave the ECU connected and laying on the floor board for step 3), 3) then drive for 30 minutes until the engine is warmed up, and then 4) recheck the codes. As far as code 53- Exhaust gas sensor sounds like an O2 sensor but I'll let one of the experts say for sure.

BTW- New injectors are over $200 from your local stealership and $177 from our sponsor. I have used injectors, reconditioned by one of our sponsors, for 1/4 of the dealership price. I've got 2 in my Q and they work great. You can email me if you are interested.

Good luck.

Mike, (and others), thanks for all the input. I checked these codes myself, but it was 2 yrs after the work had been done, hence my question about code history. I have a source to get my oem parts from about half of what the dealer charges or less. I read from other posts that the #1 & #8 injectors are a breeze so I'll be changing them out today along with the left side O2 sensor. I appreciate all the help.

For some strange reason when I re-checked the resistance on my injectors they all were at 15.5 ohms except #1 which was at 22.5. Could this be from leaving the harness unplugged overnight? Also the KS read about 660

OK, after I replaced the driver side O2 sensor and the #1 injector, I get even more codes than before.

I now get:

21 - Ignition signal circuit?34 - Knock sensor - still?53 - Exhaust gas sensor (LH)54 - Signal cicuit from A/T control unit to ECM

This is all after the work I performed on the Q. Could someone chime in and let me know where I'm missing it?
