Code 34 (knock sensor) question

Ok, car won't start after engine rebuild (car was stolen, motor got blown). I'm popping a code #34 (knock Sensor) And here's the question. Am I correct in that a Faulty knock sensor can back the timing off far enough to cause hard starting, lumpy idle when it does start, and stumbling under accel. ? I've also shown a maf circuit code, and a primary ignition (intermittant, popped once) code. I've looked everywhere, and I'm stumped.
