My buddy's 93 240sx is throwing an ECU code intermittently. The code is 32, the EGR temp sensor. He's replaced it last night, but the code popped up again today. Any ideas on what could be causing it?

Try jiggling the wire harness that goes into the sensor, the wires could be loose.

All that code means is the temp in the egr passage is not dropping suffeciently to indicate EGR flow when the vaccum is expected to be supplied to the EGR valve.

A few things can cause this, oddly enough I had to do a full work up on a 92 vert today, He has the same code...lol Anyhow If the BPT hose is burnt through it will not allow back pressure to push up on the diaphram of the BPT closing its internal vent to atmosphere sending the vaccum to the EGR. So check the little hose under the BPT, If the hose is soft and collapsed or burnt through replace it and drive the car a couple blocks and see if the light goes out. If the hose Does not appear to be an issue, slide you fingers up under the EGR valve while the car is idling and push up on its diaphram, the engine should stumble to a stall or drop to where it almost dies. If this doesnt happen then you got passages plugged and need to clean them out[no fun]. If that checks out then you need to do vaccum tests on the BPT with the car running and just off idle[so the hard idle contacts open in the tps] the hose coming from the solonoid should have vaccum. If thats ok hook it back up to the bpt and hook your vaccum gauge to the hose hooked to the EGR from the BPT now goose the throttle and watch your gauge you should see momentary bursts of vaccum on the gauge, should be able to clear 5Hg on each burst. If this doesnt happen you need to test the BPT. That should get you started if all those check out [ in that order] Hit me back and I will give you some more tests that can be performed for the BPT. I think you will find your problem with what I gave you though.

Thanks for the replies. Ok so I got more details on what's going on with his motor. He's already found that hose that had completely torn apart. Replaced. He's also replaced the BPT with a new one. Tested the EGR, and the motor stumbles.

I will notify him about checking the vac on the BPT though. Then I'll post those results. Thanks again

well then BPT tests wont be neccesary if he replaced with new. just the vaccum supplied to it. and to make sure the vaccum goes to the egr when throttled. If the source vaccum is present but it wont go to the egr valve then you need to check for back pressure to the bpt, For that you will need a vaccum gauge that also reads pressure, it is a vaccum fuel gauge. you place it on the bpt hose and romp the throttle a few times to see if it will show 1 to 1.5 lbs. If it doesnt you have lack of back pressure in the exhuast could be due to cat guts missing or a exhuast leak somewhere before the muffler.
