I was driving to work one morning and shifted to neutral while coming to a stoplight. A grinding sound appeared while shifting to neutral. After that I could not get the car in gear. I could shift gears without stepping on the clutch. I pushed the car to the side of the road. and had a tow truck tow the car home. I didn't have a ride to work, so I decided to take out the transmission. I have never seen this before. Here's what I found below.
You can see that the pad is still in great condition. But upon further inspection....
All the splines were gone on the clutch disk.
I didn't think the input shaft was all that bad...
Until I had to install the transmission three times. I had a Clutchmasters Stage 5 in my car and rarely abuse it on my stock KA24DE. I ordered a new clutch disk (non Clutchmasters) and used the same Clutchmaster's pressure plate. The first attempt I installed the transmission from under the car. I couldn't put the car in gear when it was on. On the second attempt, I took out the whole motor/transmission. It was difficult to even get the transmission off of the block, so there was a problem. Installed it back in the car and same result. Can't put the car in gear while it's on. I took out the motor/transmission again for the third time. I was able to test fit the new clutch disk with the input shaft and it didn't slide in easily at all. I used a dremel with a griding wheel to "repair" the input shaft. I was able to slide the clutch disk on smoothly afterwards. After 3 days worth or work and 3 transmission installs it finally works. Just an FYI for people that may run into a problem like this.
