i own a '89 240sx

problem: when the car is off you can shift thru the gears freely. when car is on in neutral it won't go into any gear, start it in gear and it wants to take off.

parts replaced as of yesterday: clutch master and slave cylinder, and bled a ridiculous amount of time. after the slave was replaced and bled, i was able to get it in 1st with the car on. then went into 2nd with a little force and i slowed down to stop and it wouldn't go into 1st for anything. then replaced the master and stayed with the same old problem.

now is there anything i should try before pullin the transmission out and checkin out the clutch?

Make absolutly sure it is bled right. You have to bleed it on the slave itself, and on the dampener box. Follow the lines down where it runs along the passenger side and you will see another bleeder on what is called the dampener box. If after bleeding that it doesnt work, get the dampener bypass (spl parts). If that doesnt work then check out the clutch but i can almost garuntee that is your problem.

this is how i bled it- had someone in the driver seat pump the clutch about 20 times, hold the clutch to the floor then i'm underneath and loosen that bleeder nut on the slave and some fluid would squirt out. tighten it back up, the driver releases the clutch and starts pumping it again.

i'm pretty sure thats an alirght way to bleed it but i'm gonna bleed it some more when i get off work

i did replace the master cylinder...

well i bled the hell out of it the other nite. figured maybe it just needs to be all worked in. so i started it in 1st, car started moving forward so i just applied some gas and started going. with some force i was able to get thru all the gears up to 4th, didn't have enough straights to get enough speed to shift into 5th.

so i come up to a stop sign, found out i need to rev match perfectly to downshift. ready to downshift from 2nd to 1st and it wouldn't go into 1st. so i let the rpms come down and idle, still won't go into 1st. so i turned the car off, put in 1st, start it up and pull back in the drive way. clutch feels perfect (presure-wise), no leaks from the master or slave. now its really bothering my cuz i have no clue what the problem is, guess this weekend its time to take apart the transmission and find out whats goin on in there.

I had the same problem, but when I pulled the clutch pedal up with my foot it started to work again. It only came up about an inch or two, but it seemed to do the trick.

Did you ever find out what was wrong with yours?

i did today kinda, i'm actually takin it to a shop (i don't really trust shops but i'm gonna hafta make an exception) called Nisstech. some guy who knows what he's doin, he said theres a special bleeder tool i'm supposed to use that costs about $400 from nissan. so he said he's hands-down sure there is just air in the system. he said i would never get all the air out without the tool. so i'm droppin it off today after work and we'll see what happens tomarrow.

it sounds like throw out bearing- does it make any noise? Slave would not do that.

according to the all data you shold raise the front of the car about 2 feet, no special tool required. I had the same problem, i had to replace the clutch disc, but reused my throw out bearing. Plus make sure you are running hoses from the bleeder screw into a container of brake fuid, if not you are only going to suck air back into the system as soon as the lets off the pedal.
