I have a '97 XE 4X4 PU, and when I fully depress the clutch in 1st gear (or any forward gear) it wants to creep forward and makes an odd whining noise. If I release it about 2 inches everything stops, and the clutch seems to be disengaged. I have replaced the slave, bypassed the damper and bled the system thoroughly with NO change. I am considering the master before I start in on the transmission. ANY IDEAS???????????

Sounds like a throw out bearing is making noise.

Doesn't the throw-out bearing make noise while driving, or is it a sign that it is going away? This problem happened overnight. And there is no noise when clutch is depressed and not in gear.??????

BTW The Dark Highway Music is really COOL!!!

It reminds me of the FLOYD + a kick a$$ nite club.

It could be going which would make sense that the bearing is under load when you have your foot on the pedal.

Thanks for checking out the Dark Highway stuff, your feedback means a lot to me. I have beena Floyd fan since I was in diapers and will be till I have to wear diapers again.

Do you think I should replace the master cyl ($130.00) before I worry about replacing the clutch assy ($8-$900.00) at the shop. I could maybe do it myself for less than $300.00 but it may take too long with my limited experience. I have other things to do , you know.

The more I listen to 'Dark Highway' the more I wonder, who do I think I am.

A man in diapers searching for someone to take care of me.!?

I'd get a second opinion before throwing any money at it. Clutch master cylinders are not a common failure on these trucks. You may want to start simple by bleeding the system which costs almost nothing to do.

I bled the system thoroughly and there was no change in my problem. I will be going to my mechanic to see whassup. Although he was confused also.

Thanks for all your help.

A new master cyclinder is fairly inexpensive. I would replace it and bleed it really good.

If there is a noise only when the clutch pedal is depressed than I would say the thow out bearing is making the noise.

I doubt its an issue with the hydraulics. When a part of that system goes, it usually just leaks and fails to hold pressure.

The T.O. bearing is a possibility, though it doesn't really explain why the car is trying to lurch forward. T.O bearings tend to make more of a water running through pipes in the wall type of sound anyways.

If a car wants to move forward with the clutch pedal fully depressed, my first thoughts are that the pilot bushing might be binding. What confuses me about it is that the noise and lurching stops with the clutch pedal 2 inches out. My guess is that the transmission may need to be dropped to see what is actually going on.
