I have a 1990 240sx with 167,000miles on it and over the past week or 2 the clutch has been slipping and my driver side floorboard is very very hot right by the transmission hump. Do I just need fluid or is the clutch just heating up a whole lot.

Where do you live? Perhaps the heat shields on your exhaust piping has rusted away causing the heat to rise up to the floorboard. I see that a lot with cars from the East coast.

If your clutch is slipping, it's best that you just get a clutch job done. Especially with 167k on the odometer, sounds like it's time for one. Also, you'll have to change the transmission and clutch fluid anyways when you do your clutch.

You don't have to change the transmission and clutch fluid to do a clutch. However it's suggested that you do it when the transmission is out.

I agree, you don't necessarily have to change the clutch fluid since he isn't exposing the clutch hydraulic system to air. However, after the installation of a new clutch, it is also recommended that he bleed the clutch fluid. Furthermore, the removal of the drive axle will allow transmission fluid to drain out. So it's really up to him if he chooses to do a half-a$$ job, changing of the fluids is highly recommended. To put simply, it's only logical that he change the clutch and transmission fluids, assuming that he does choose to install a new clutch.

First of all if there is a whining noise coming from the transmission you are already screwed. So i hope the transmission isn't humming. I fit is you are low on gear lube or something is broke and rubbing and heating stuff up. I broke a gear and it is jamed in my gears. I just lost my transmission last night. I would check and make sure you have clutch fluid in you resivor. Adjust the clutch might stop slipping. If it has no effect is will be a bad clutch master or a wornout clutch. If you have a bad slave or bad master cylinder it will cause your clutch to wear out faster. You can also get a clutch master rebuild kit from advanced auto for $10.99. Nick
