so yeah as the title says i would like some input on some of the clutches and or pressure plates that i could possibly run

i used an oem one that i had laying around from another engine (replaced it when the engine was pulled andreplaced with an F1 flywheel brand new, not the greatest product in the world but i only got 150 hp so it cant be that bad. and from day 1 its been slipping pretty bad so i need to replace it AGAIN)

basically im looking for a great clutch with maybe a pressure plate but also decently priced. im debating on splurging for an intense a** expensive one that i wont have to replace for a long long time which i will probably do cause im sick of replacing this thing

need something that grabs hard and i dont really care if its a sprung or unsprung disc type or puck type any decent clutch that you have run and is fairly priced let me know :inoutgay:

The Nismo R Tune clutch and pressure plate would be a good choice. A little pricey tho :)

sick ill do my research into those and wait for some more suggestions to look into as well

i think this is the perfect time to ask a question that had always made me sorta confused

ok soooo. my friend has a superior clutch...its a home made clutch..and its pretty boss

this is what confuses me...the pressure plate had a bolt that found its way out while he was driving so we fixed it and we replaced his pressure plate (it was altered in house we are lead to believe) with an oem one. now i was always under the impression that the stiffness of the pedal was determined by the pressure plate. but its still just as stiff as ever...we thought it was the fact that the dampener was bypassed...but in my new car that im bulding the dampender is bypassed as well and mine is super soft wtih an oem pressureplate

i understand the function of the pressure plate and how they work (in general) so how does did this happen?

and what would you say is the most important part of the set up (the item to focus on) the clutch itself or does the pressure plate play a significant roll too?

X2 i had one in my zenki. that clutch has about 40k on it now and still grabs hard. used to break 3rd gear loose when i was turbo

still dont quite understand how less surface area equates to more friction? the only thing i can think of is it comes wtih an intense pressure plate??? these all seem sorta pricy so finding the most legit for the lowest price is going to be a trade off

and as for the twin disc clutches...those seem really intesne but i do need something that i will not have to replace again for a long time and will survive clutck kick after kick after kick so yeah i might be looking into those but so far its single disc ones ive seen

ceramic clutches dont last a long time. they chew the s*** out of the pressure plate and flywheel. the wear down fast. but they bite hard and handle power. if you want a clutch to last long, get an oem and dont beat on it. true story

well the car is going to see the track once a month and mostly daily driving...not going to drift on the street anymore since i crashed so it wont be beat as often but it needs to hold up at the track because i dont let up i got an oem one in there right now

i didnt buy it so i dont know how worked in it is at the moment...still going to give it the benifit of the doubt and break it in for 500 miles but if it dosnt start to look better i got to change it and i wanna be sure what i put in there will last cause im sick of changing it haha thats why id like personal experiences from you all and not the reviews of the manufacturers

p.s. i dont have power haha i got 140 lbs to the wheels at best so i dont need anything insane! just last awhile and grab decent to kick the hell out of it

if an oem pressure plate feel heavy it's either not oem lol... or somethings wrong because it is the pressure plate that causes the clutch pedal to be heavy.

as for friction, that was something i had a hard time coping with in my mind in physics class and well due to my sleeping thru that class i cant really remember how it works but well... it does, it has to do with clamping PSI and what not. The smaller surface area of the disc amplifies the clamping PSI.

the centerforce dual friction has a full face organic side and the other side is puck style aggressive, feels a lil bit nicer than oem and grabs well. I was clutch kicking the s*** outta my camaro and generally abusing it ( 6500 rpm shifts and what not ) really didnt give any problems disengaging at that high of an RPM..

although when i put my rebuilt S14 KA in the coupe i bought a used $40 clutch and PP from my friend that was blued and heat blistered and i just used a pnuematic rotary tool with a 3M brown cookie to break the glaze and well i beat the hell outta this clutch and its surviving

haha i see well i can see how the clamping force plays a very big role i was just pondering the whole clutch set up in my mind the other day. the whole thing is remarkable that it even works with that flimzy little thing hahaha

im just hoping that this clutch breaks in ok... its still doing its slipping thing but it seems to be slowly getting better only about 20 miles on it so far

i like the idea of a long lasting oem clutch but a heavy a** duty pressure plate?

if you dont have high power goals thats probably the best way to go. i would for sure do that over like a 6 puk if you dont need one. the stock disc will last a while.

Using a Spec Stage 2 on my KA-T, no problems so far and I'm happy with it.
Picked it up for a little over 300 bucks at FRsport, great place!

no i havnt taking it out yet. i was told it was hell of new when i got the engine and stuff and it looked in great condition and i know it wasnt abused but i have a feeling it was contaminated with some oil

but yes i dont want alot of power. i cant even handle 150 hp correctly drifting and i dont really plan on going turbo until im a good driver with stock power so long lasting is my idea

pressure plate reccomendations? and also they should all be compatable with the oem clutch if it is ordered for the specific engine i.e. ka24de right?

im just trying to look at all my options and choose one that will keep me from having to do this..ive done this 3 times an im totally sick of it haha

sorry i was talking to razi. i should have used quotes.

yes if you order just a pressure plate for your car/engine it will work with the oem clutch

ok so this is my old set up that failed me...i thought i would share...

i noticed that when the clutch got hot when i was at the track it would start slipping but it would go back to being ok when i let it cool down...when i pulled my engine this is what i discovered

flywheel covered in hot spots!

Image
Image

pressure plate that had hot spots as well...

Image

the clutch...f1 racing stage 2 kevlar 200 hp rating..seems ok to me?

Image

a full sheet of 150 grit sand paper and some elbow greese..can still see the hot spots though so i dont think im going to run this...only 2000 miles on it :wtf2:

Image

any ideas on what could have done this!?

it happened because it got hot...
anyways for a clutch setup i highly reccomend you do a white bunny clutch swap. Its no more than 250 bucks at autozone or kragen for clutch flywheel and pressure plate. I was running it on my engine \/ which saw over 400hp. I also ran it on my coupe. it grabs hard and has a slightly harder than stock feel.

ACT Street Disc with Xtreme Pressure Plate.

I f*** love stiff clutch pedals though, so I dunno if you'd like it.

EDIT:

Image

Looks like an OE style clutch too, except with different friction material.

Competition Clutch stage 4. Awesome clutch, grabs super hard. I'm at about 275whp, it's good for around 350 I believe.

Either that or the White Bunny clutch swap.

I'm putting in one of those as we speak...i mean type. I can't wait to check it out. My dad and my brother had the same clutch in their '70 Nova and '56 Bel Air

well i know its a "hot spot" because it got hot but im wondering why it even started slipping when it got hot in the first place...i guess its just a horrible clutch material

i guess my next question would be is that pressure plate ok to run? i liked the pressure plate alot and i figure i could just swap in an oem clutch and use that pressure plate its an exedy i believe

i like the white bunny set up but i already put the flywheel on...and i lack a good impact wrench (the one i had managed to get off 3 bolts and i had to borrow a gun to get the other 3) so i dont think i will go that route, when this flywheel finally dies ill probably opt for the white bunny

im going to give the set up i have right now a chance to get better (it seems like it is slowly getting better but im not expecting anything astonishing...the flywheel is new and i guess it needs to be broken in..i feel like it shouldnt though since the pressure plate and clutch have both been properly broken in but we will see)

i dont have alot of power and i dont plan on going turbo for another 2 years so im thinking right now an oem clutch with a powerful pressure plate from a name place or that exedy i have is the route i want IF and ONLY IF the clutch material can take repeated kicking?

i like the idea of an organic clutch since they last a long time with the clamping of a good pressure plate but i dont know if the oem material itself will be able to handle the abbuse of clutch kicking

maybe your clutch pedal is just a hair out of adjustment. try loosening it about a 1/4" so you have more free play in your pedal. sounds dumb but might fix it.

well it only takes about 3 hours to do a clutch job. you might as well just try it again, and if it doesnt work then get yourself a new setup.

if you have a short piece of chain you can make the chain go from the bell housing bolt to the pressure plate bolt and it will hold it so you can use hand tools. i have never dont that but have seen it done and it works killer. i have tried fighting with a screwdriver and a socket before and its a pain in the a**.

i was fiddiling with it but i did go back to close to stock pedal feel...my friends has like no travel and his seems to work fine so weird...and it wouldnt slip normally just when i pushed it and it got hot...oh well ill probably try selling it to make a few bucks or something

haha if it takes you 3 hours i want you helping me haha it takes me a good bit longer than that to do it for whatever reason probably cause ive never done it before...this time should be faster i might try the oem and that pressure plate

That is not a good excuse to not change a flywheel...the chain works awesome. 3hrs psssh, my last one was done in under an hour. ive done mine to many times. I also had my spec run out after 8000 miles. looked like dead birds in my bellhousing. You can get those bolts off and it will be worth it in the end. dont treat it like a glass vase...she was a slut and I treated her like one!
