Clutch sounds... what could it be?

My 96' 240sx SE has 120k miles on it and is still on the original clutch. It still engages fine and very smooth, but in the last few weeks when I push the clutch in, it makes a loud buzzing sound that I can hear and feel vibrating through the shift knob..... when I release the clutch either in neutral or into gear, the sound stops (it stops even after I release the clutch pedal just a little bit).

The clutch isn't slipping at all when I drive or engage into gear, so I am drawn to think that it is not that the clutch itself is going out. I checked the clutch fluid and it is full.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? any input is appreciated.... thanks ~ JD

Mine does it too. Especially after taking it on road trips. I was wondering what the noise is too. I think it might be the throw out bearing on the clutch.

Yea, if it only happens when you disengage the clutch, step on the pedal, then it is the throwout bearing. You will need to replace it soon and if your doing that then replace clutch, pilot bushing, resurface the flywheel and possibly the rear main seal on the engine if your plannning on keeping the car for a while.

Not that difficult of a job, can be done in an afternoon with the right tools. The hardest part is getting that little pilot bushing out. PITA.

The buzzing noise may simply be the transmission itsself, as well as the flywheel.

You sort of need to decide where the noise is coming from. the front or middle of the transmission. Then you should check the output shaft teeth for any wear.
