I did a search on this and didn't find anything....

I have a '91 SE HICAS with about 85,000 miles and what I believe to be the original clutch.

About a month ago, I noticed that when I was merging onto the freeway, upon shifting into 4th, my engine revved pretty much freely for a second and then finally seemed to slip into gear. After a while, it started doing the same thing in fifth and third gears as well. When I punch it in first or second, the car just goes like normal, but if I'm in the top three gears and I punch the gas, the car revs free (accelerating slightly) for about 2k and then seems to catch and then return to full forward acceleration. It basically feels like it does when driving on packed snow, where you accelerate, but it takes a second for the wheels to get traction, or when you drive and slightly engage the clutch. My friend is a mechanic and he recommended putting the car in 5th while standing still and popping the clutch. He said that if the car stuttered, then the clutch was going out. Well my car died immediately, which apparently means that the clutch is not going bad. Is there something else it could be, or is my clutch toast?

try putting it in 5th while driving like 20 and floor it, see what happens, sometimes you need to be moving for it to slip or it doesnt have enough inerta

now, remember this, the engine has to work harder to turn the last gears, so thats when the clutch will slip usually

I had the same problem when I first got my S14 with 93,000 on it. It had the stock clutch, it would slip at full throttle when i chagned gears. Just go ahead and replace it with something better It's not hard. Just make sure that you reinstall the throw-out bearing properly. That thing can be tricky. Take a good look at it before you pull it off of the transmission if you don't have an FSM. I had a friend helping me, he just pulled it off and reintstalled it while I was replacing the clutch. In the end, we had to pull everything back apart b/c he installed it wrong. Not fun!

I'm having the same exact problem..

It doesn't happen as easily in cold weather for some reason though...

It's a loose throw-out bearing.

<-- wants an ACT Stage 1 clutch kit

Good luck man.

Might be throwout, but probably not. Your clutch is done. Replace with new and everything will be golden.
