I did a search on this and didn't find anything....
I have a '91 SE HICAS with about 85,000 miles and what I believe to be the original clutch.
About a month ago, I noticed that when I was merging onto the freeway, upon shifting into 4th, my engine revved pretty much freely for a second and then finally seemed to slip into gear. After a while, it started doing the same thing in fifth and third gears as well. When I punch it in first or second, the car just goes like normal, but if I'm in the top three gears and I punch the gas, the car revs free (accelerating slightly) for about 2k and then seems to catch and then return to full forward acceleration. It basically feels like it does when driving on packed snow, where you accelerate, but it takes a second for the wheels to get traction, or when you drive and slightly engage the clutch. My friend is a mechanic and he recommended putting the car in 5th while standing still and popping the clutch. He said that if the car stuttered, then the clutch was going out. Well my car died immediately, which apparently means that the clutch is not going bad. Is there something else it could be, or is my clutch toast?
