Looking at buying another 1984 300zx Turbo. Guess I just love these cars too much. The owner said it needs a new clutch sleeve, but when I inquired about what work needs to be done she simply stated she doesn't know that much about it. Not sure how she could say it's the clutch sleeve when that's an internal part. I am assuming she's talking about the following part from Nissan which is listed as Nissan 30501-N1600Sleeve-Bearing. The only problem is it says it's for the VG30T engine yet the diagram shows the FS5W71C (non-turbo) transmission.

If you have a trusted mechanic I would have it evaluated before you start to buy parts. Maybe you just replace the whole clutch not that expensive if your going to drop the tranny to get to the clutch anyways. Jim Wolf has some nice kits!

I suppose what I meant to ask was asking is how would she know it's the clutch sleeve unless removing the transmission and inspecting it? I don't believe it matters if I have to replace the clutch anyway. The car has 130k, but I just hope it's not a blown transmission. The car does start up and run, however, she mentioned the timing belt and cam seals have not been done. The water pump was previously done. I'm not very confident I'll be able to get the car at this point though because she's a very difficult person to communicate with and get information from. But if I can wing it, I'll end up with the color combo I've always been wanting. Black with the Turbo graphics and tan leather interior. That was the color I fell in love with from the original 300zx (Z31) commercial from 1984.

Thanks for the clutch recommendations. What do you think about the FX clutch kits on Ebay and equivalents? The price is higher now due to inflation.

Congrats!!! I bought my Z brand new in 84' and wanted a turbo but the insurance was too steep for a 23 year old, so I took T-tops and leather digital package along with adding the rear spoiler. Over the last 38 years it did save me some $$ for a NA.

I would 100% do the timing belt and cam seals before you go any further. Your chances of needing tranny work is pretty good, I had mine done at 120k, I have 170k now and I am on 3rd clutch. The clutch you can probably swing if you have the tools and lift and some help but the tranny you will need a pro. I have ZERO skills as a mechanic so 100% of my stuff is done professinally.
