i've gotten quotes for around $250-$300 for labor (4 hrs worth), and $200 for parts. This is around central florida btw. Do those prices seem too much? I know oem parts from an autoparts store are around $100-$120, but the shop I'm going to will warranty their $200 parts and install for a year, and I'll have to call back to find out if those parts include extra stuff that the autopart stores don't include.

I wish I could change it out on my own, but alas, no garage, no serious tools, no skill, so no can do.

So does $450-$500 seem too much for a clutch replacement job? Also the mechanic kept saying something bout replacing the rear main seal or rear seal or something...can someone explain what that is?

TIA.

Good price, it would take you way longer than 4 hours to do it yourself anyway. Rear main oil seal is the seal behind your flywheel, sealing the crankshaft hole where it connects to your flywheel around a bearing. Good idea to replace it now while you are down and in there, not 100% nessesary though unless you got high mileage.

tru tru, thx for the reply...i may have to go with that seal replacement cause that engine has 160K+ on it. any idea on the price of that? i'm guessing the labor shouldn't be too bad cause the flywheel has to come off already to be resurfaced...

yea man do it yourself, its not as hard as you think. just have 2 people around to help you raise and lower the transmission, that will make it easier. it took me a good day to do mine the first time and the 2nd time i took it off by myself in 1hr.

theres a faq in the instals page on the 240sx.org site. it is step by step on how to install a clutch w/ pics. it is very helpful.

i think pricing are the same everywhere.... if you could get the labor rate of lower than $200, then you got yourself a pretty dam good deal.... of course i never actually paid for a clutch service since i do it myself.... i just happen to know labor charges.....

Thats not a bad price but, if you do it your self. You can always save money and have a few friends help you for the price of a free meal. With the money saved you can upgade to an aftermarket clutch. I can change a clutch out in about 1.5 to 2 hours. So first time may take a whole day and knowledge gained so next time you can change your clutch out yourself. Nick

don't forget the pilot bushing... most aftermarket clutch kits didn't provide a new one in the package...

Ya, i got everything except for an impact wrench for the stubborn flywheel bolts... i was lucky that the flywheel was in good shape; bit of sanding down & was good to go!
