The other day, my clutch started slipping all the sudden, nd eventually died on the way to work. I had it towed to a shop, and they confirmed that the clutch was gone. They (Goodyear service center) quoted me $669 total, with $321 in parts, $299 in labor, plus other small misc charges. I know I can get the parts for less than half that, but the shop won't install them. I'm fairly experienced and mechanically inclined, and I have ramps, jacks, and basic hand tools. Could I change the clutch myself? How long would you estimate it would take? I've seen the how-to on 240sx.org, and it looks fairly straightforward. Suggestions? Anything I should know that the how-to doesn't mention? Thanks.

I've got a full clutch job down to an hour. It's very easy once you've done it a few times. The main points I can make are to remove the exhaust at the downpipe, then use it to pull on and tilt the engine downward in it's mounts, this will give you a straight shot out without dragging the transmission on the tunnel. Also make sure you pull the shifter first and either drain the fluid, or tape up the shifter opening. Pull the driveshaft from the differential to get it completely out of the way. You can do the whole job by yourself by just laying underneath the transmission, pull it out and lay it on your chest, then rotate it off of you, just make sure the car is high enough off the ground to move around easily. There's really nothing else to know, make sure to replace the throwout bearing and pilot bushing, and turn the flywheel. Inspect the release fork and springs for any wear, I had a worn bearing retainer that I didn't notice until it slipped off the fork four times within three weeks. Another reason I got so good at pulling it.
