Long story short. I have a 5sp 2000 Maxima SE. I was having problems with my clutch. It would work in the mornings and get progressively worse as I drove it during the day. A hot summer day would not help. My mechanic thought it was my hydraulic system. He replaced the Master cylinder(still had problems). He replaced the Slave Cylinder (still had problems). He replaced the hoses (still had problems. Now he wants to take out the transmission and use a clutch kit to replace the clutch. He says it will be about $1,000 to do it.

Is this guy ripping me off? Is there a certain clutch kit that I should buy? Should I have him do anything else while he is taking the transmission out?

If you give us more detail of what you mean by that, it would help for us to help you.

Thanks! The clutch in the morning works well. It is low to the floor and easy to push in. After driving it, the clutch lifts higher off the floor and is real tight. When it got even hotter, I would have to rev the engine before it would go into gear. It got to the point where I could not drive it and I would have to let the car cool down before driving it again. I hope this helps and I appreciate your responses.

Not to insult your intellegence but have you checked the transmission fluid level or checkd for leaks in all places where it could possibly leak? Or have you simply replaced the old fluid with new fluid. If not try that and add lucas gear additive to it. Or if that doesnt work like others have mentioned it could be one of the cylinders.

I dont know if you have tools but i think it was just a bad clutch the whole time and that guy was just trying to make money. you might just want to get one of your good friends a good set of tools and a repair manual. you could learn a lot.
