Hello Friends,

I had a new clutch installed on my 93' 240 about a year ago. Before that I had the original clutch which lasted about 10 years!!! Anyways a couple of weeks ago, I started to hear a rattling noise when I would press down on the clutch pedal all the way. I noticed that if I did not press it completely in but just enough to put the car in first gear or reverse I would not hear the noise. I did not know what the noise was, but guessed that maybe it was the throw out bearing. Then one morning on my way to work, as I was exiting the freeway I went to take the car out of 5th gear to approach a stop light and noticed that the clutch pedal was really hard to push in. I managed to push it in and take the car out of fifth gear. I then could not put the car in any other gear. So I assume that there is defeinitely something going on with the clutch. I do not drive my car hard at all, hence my first clutch lasted 10 years. I was able to put the car in gear with the engine turned off and drive back home after several starts and stops due to traffic lights, traffic, etc. as you know when the clutch will not work you basically have to start the car with it in gear. That sucks especially on a 30 mile drive through Dallas traffic and lights.

I am sure I will have to take the transmission off to see what is the deal, but do you guys have a clue as to what is going on here? I plan to do the work myself, and your help is greatly appreciated!!!!

possibly the shift fork pivot broke, have seen it more on trucks but have seen it on a couple z,s and 240's you are definitly going to have to r&r the trans to inspect the problem. If its not that it could be the pressure plate.

Is the shift fork the same as the withdrawal level noted in the service manual?

i actually had the same problem on a customers 240sx...it happened to be the pressure plate... but the shift fork can also be a problem, it was one of my possibilities!

Thanks for the reply NISTECH and hotshot240, but is the shift fork the same as the withdrawal level noted in the service manual? The withdrawal level is the "thing", for lack of a better term, attached to the slave cylinder.

its what the slave cyl pushes on. the only way you can inspect it is to pull the trans down.

okay that's what i thought, thanks.

Also when people talk about rotating the transmission 180 degrees, what direction are they talking about? I imagine that is rolling it on its side due to the limited space. But is it toward the passenger's side or the driver's side?

your goal is to have your starter bump facing down.

I need advice on getting the transmission off. I have the drive shaft and starter off and all harnesses disconnected. Do you guys recommend jacking up anything like the engine, or first removing the transmission support brakets before removing the bolts? Is the oil pan strong enough to use to jack up the engine? I have read this in several post. Should I remove the top bolts first or does it not matter? That top bolt seems very difficult to get to.

Please respond ASAP, you help is appreciated.

I have all the bolts loosened and I am ready to take the transmission off. :ylsuper

My question is how far to the front of the car should I place the jack? Of course I do not want the transmission to fall off the jack while I am lowering it.

I took off the transmission and notice that the pressure plate looks good. The only thing that looks wrong is the spring on the withdrawal lever, it is bent. I think this may prevent the lever from pivoting correctly when clutch pedal is pressed in. Is it possible that this is causing my problem. All the fingers on the pressure plate are straight and feel strong when I press on them. The withdrawal lever is also in good shape, except for the spring as noted above. So is there a way to determine if the throw out bearing assembly needs to be replaced? I am leaning towards replacing the bent spring and the throw out bearing assembly, but this assembly was replace about a year ago when I had the clutch changed at a shop so could it be bad already?

Oh well just wanted to post a follow up for future reference. Turns out that one of the springs on my clutch disk some how came off and was lodged between the clutch disk and clutch plate. I just replaced the disk, plate and bearing and am now back in business!!!! I could have just replaced the disk but I had a warranty on everything and I got the replacment parts for free so I might as well replace them while I have the transmission off. I put the tansmission back in in about in 30 minutes with my wife operating my floor jack and me underneath the car guiding the transmission in. Not nearly as difficult as many have made it seem. Anyways if anyone needs any help with clutch problems feel free to drop me an email.

P.S. I found the use of universal joints for taking the transmission bolts out extremely valuable. No need to jack up the engine or anything. Thanks for the help hotshot240sx and NISTECH.
