my clutch pedal has over 1 inch of play in it. iv read several threads about the adjustment and the information seemed a bit fuzzy. can someone please tell me how to take the play out of my clutch pedal so i do not go insane and kill myself. btw i drive an s14.

First try bleeding the clutch system.

To adjust the pedal free play, look up under the dash where the pedal is at. You should see a rod that the pedal pushes into the master cylinder. On the end of that, there is a locknut you have to loosen. Take a 12mm open wrench and break that loose. Then rotate the rod, until it tightens up. There should be about 1-3mm of free play before the clutch engages.

ah, found this right after typing this post.http://www.240sx.org/faq/artic...t.htm

You want to make sure there is at least the 1-3mm of free play. If you don't, the clutch might not be completely disengaged when your foot is off the pedal. Then you will risk slipping the clutch badly and it won't grab as well either.

So go with what the factory service manual recommends, 1-3mm. 1" of free play is too much, none is not enough.

ok this is exactly what i did. i turned the rod all the way till it got hard to turn and i noticed my pedal had no play at all so i backed it out liek a turn and a half and it seems to have a tiny hair of play like you said. however my clutch engagement point is further up now but i like it. tell me if this adjustment can effect clutch engagement points. i like it were its at i can shift quicker now and my car will chirp 3rd with my spec 2 cluch on a stock ka.

You're right about it changing the engagement point. More play will cause it to engage lower. Less play will cause it to engage higher up(because the release bearing gets pushed into the pressure plate sooner). Just watch and make sure it engages completely before your foot is off the pedal. I personally like it to engage closer to the middle, so I gave it slightly more play than normal. gj

Sorry, what I really meant was to make sure there is a little more travel in the pedal has after you feel the clutch engage.
