I changed my transmission fluid yesterday. Since its manual, I used gear oil. What does everybody use? what grade? I was looking for the one that Chilton recommends but the closest I got is API GL-5. Chilton recommends API GL4 for manual.

Anyway, after changing the transmission fluid. My clutch pedal feel has no resistance half way down. It was already dark and cold so I didnt make bleeding on the master cylinder or slave cylinder. I'm hoping to get to it tonight. But why will I have to adjust or bleed the clutch pedal? how would air get in it?

I drained the fluid from the bottom and refill it from the shifter.

Another problem I get now is, I am having difficulty putting the shifter to any gear except 5th!! It's a bit better now but it is still not smooth. Maybe I tighten the shifter too much?

I will get to it after work but if I can get a good heads up then it will make my search go faster. Thanks in advance.

how much fluid did you put in? on most trannies, there is a side hole that you fill the fluid to the bottom to... you might have overfilled the transmission. thats very bad if indeed you did... check the book and see where you check the level from.

I got the Redline synthetic fluid from Enjuku. You might want to atleast put in the right type of oil. The incorrect type of oil could cause harder shifting. Changing the fluid would have nothing to do with your clutch pedal. Yeah it sounds like maybe you need to bleed the clutch hydralics. Air can get in a number of ways, but the point is you need to remove it. If the clutch is not fully disengaging because of the "spongy" air in your lines, it could cause harder shifting, too. You do check the transmission fluid from the hole in the side of the transmission. I just opened the top plug and poured the fluid in thru the shifter like you did until the fluid begins coming out the side. To simply check it you just remove that top plug and feel with your finger to see if the fluid is up to the bottom of the hole which means it is at the correct level.

I was having difficulty opening the side bolt where we suppose to fill the transmission fluid. So I just looked in my FSM and measure 5 1/8pnt or 2.4 L of oil. I may have to drain it again as soon as I get the redline. What viscosity do you guys get?

I want to bleed my clutch line and replace it. What do I replace it with?

if you replace the clutch line, make sure you go with a braided line. youll love it. much better pedal response.

dont use gl5 in your transmission, its no good for the syncros. the additives in gl5 are designed for the hypoid gear in the rear, but will corrode the brass that the syncros are made out of. its not going to instantly kill them, but replace the fluid with gl4 as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone. I will order the Redline M90 transmission fluid. Did you guys have a hard time trying to take out the refill bolt? I couldn't take it out so I just measured it according to FSM.. I tried spraying it with some rust remover but its still tight... hopefully I get to it this weekend. the fluid for the hydrolics? what kind of fluid is this?
