Im new here. I have a 1995 240sx (totally stock and untouched) with almost 17k miles on it... no typo. Was even lower till I started driving it daily as it was my uncles.

I could be wrong, but I feel like the clutch isnt doing quite right. Shifts always seem to be rough and sometimes brutal, and I always feel like Im banging gears and Ive actually had the gears grind on me SEVERAL times because of this. Ive got redline fluid in it. The car also hates reverse with a burning passion. You have to be fully stopped, then shift into first, then reverse.. and sometimes it wont even let you go all the way into gear so you have to try again or else it will grind. The other morning I started up the car cold and started driving it, shifted to 2nd, and was probably fine for 2-3 seconds and then the shifter was literally ripped out of my hand and thrown into neutral very violently. Like I wasnt all the way in gear or something but the car was still accelerating.. What could cause these issues? Clutch?

Sounds like the Synchros are going out. Do a google search for transmission pops out of gear 240sx. Theres a lot of posts about it. Sounds similar to your issue, grinding gears, poping out of gears, and hard to shift into reverse.

Have you checked/changed your transmission fluid lately?

Or look at the slave cylinder to make sure its moving at least an inch when the pedal is depressed.

Check the obvious stuff. Check to see what level your clutch fluid is at. If the clutch master cylinder is leaking, it'll most likely be leaking inside the cabin under the dash. Check your slave cylinder for movement like stated above. Look for any leaks in the hydraulic lines.

I sure hope the synchros aren't going out with this low of mileage! Ive only had it come out of gear once, but the gears grinding has happened no telling how many times.. I changed the fluid less than 3 months ago (-2,000 miles) to Redline MT90.

I'll check the MC clutch fluid level and also check to see if its leaking under the dash. Where is the slave cylinder that I need to check for movement?

Slave cylinder is on the lower right side of the transmission. You can't miss it. You can see it move when the clutch pedal is pushed in.

Good idea.

The worse thing to do to a car is let it sit, with only 17K on the clock the car has definatly been sitting for a awhile.

The pilot bearing in the crank could also be somewhat frozen and not letting the input shaft move freely, this causes the shaft to move with engine speed when the clutch is depressed and would cause grinding. I would take the trans out and make sure nothing is frozen and go over all the linkage. With 17K on the trans I doubt its shot already.

Betting on low fluid if he hasnt even checked that. mine loses it over time, been wondering where it was going.

if it were mine, even with that low mileage...i would try and replace the clutch/throwout/slave. check all lines and check the master while youre at it.
its an expense and a little work but isnt going to take more than a day to do.
it really could be syncros going bad too so keep an eye out for a good transmission to change into yours. a low mileage good condition schassis is worth a good bit.
