Hello All:

Every so often when I change gears, I hear this sound like something is rubbing at high speed (clutch, flywheel?). The sound only comes on during the time when I move the stick out of a gear and before it goes into the next gear.

It sounds like an air powered wrench when it turns.

It doesn't happen on every gear change. It happens about 20% of the time. But when it does, it's pretty loud and the gear seem to struggle to get in.

Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by T/O... or the pilot bushing. =P

The sound is like an air-wratchet gun.

Maybe the clutch isn't dis-engaging completely?

I did have a low amount of clutch fluid and I added some. Would air in the clutch fluid cause this?

since you are new here I will give you a very breif description of the 2 components. but please,in the future use the search function at the upper right corner of the screen to gain knowledge on your car. this site is loaded with great info on 240's. Welcome to nico.

T/O=Throw out bearing . the bearing that rides on your pressure plate when pushing the clutch pedal down to disengauge the clutch disk from the flywheel. its inside the bell housing of the trans. If this bearing is dry (no internal lubrication)it will growl pretty loud and you may feel a vibration in the clutch pedal depending on how bad the bearing is.

Pilot bushing= it is a bushing that is pressed into the flywheel. your transmission input shafts tip rides in this bushing. When the clutch is fully engauged the flywheel and the input shaft are rotating at the same speed. when the clutch pedal is depressed the clutch is disengauged and allows the transmission input shaft to slow down in speed. If the bushing is distorted or at an angle it will drag on the input shaft causeing the most god awful screeching/groaning noise.

When I installed a new clutch I also get that type of sound about 20% of the time too. It's like a squealing/rubbing sound thats very high pitched. I think the guy that resurfaced my flywheel did a shaddy job.... Or my brand new T/O bearing is dead. I don't really get the sound when shifting gears, maybe 2% of the time. If I am at a light, and just run through my gears 1,2,3,4,5 It will do It. Once I let go of the clutch, the noise stops and I can put It Into gear again and It's fine. I just don't feel like getting under the car and drain the transmission yatta yatta. I'll wait till my next clutch job I guess.
