I recently bought a 98 240 and it has some issues with the clutch. I think it might be the master cylinder or the slave cylinder. The clutch will slip sometimes but not all the time, the peddle also doesnt come all the way back up. I have about an inch of play at the top of the peddle. Sometimes when i come to a stop and put the clutch in all the way the car still pulls forward so it seems the clutch doesnt disengage all the way. I tried to adjust the clutch and it didnt do anything.I just wanted some other onions before i bought a new clutch or something else. There is also no smell of burnt clutch while driving around.

If the clutch is going south it will slip when torque is applied, revs go up but car doesn't accelerate.

Sounds like a hydraulic problem. Are you losing clutch fluid? Check for fluid leak on the floorboard under the clutch pedal for master cylinder leak, or under the rubber for slave cylinder. Best to replace both at the same time, as they are undr $50 total.
