I took the task of installing my new clutch today. I am planning on doing some sort of swap next summer, so I got a Clutchmasters Stage I clutch. A buddy of mine bought it for me for my birthday cuz I helped him pull his engine and do his clutch as well. Anyway, I went into the whole thing thinking it was gonna be a major PITA. We started at 12:30 today, and ended up getting the transmission back in and ready to go by 3:30. I also changed the fluid out for Redline MT-90 75W90 fluid. WOW. The fluid made a huge difference in itself. The shifts are smoother, and 3rd no longer grinds (yippy!!). I also replaced my rear diff fluid with Redline as well. As for the clutch install, it was way easier than everyone makes it out to be. It's definetely nice to have a second person there to help jimmy the transmission out and in. It was actually harder to get the damn thing out than back in. And let me say, it's way easier to get this transmission in and out than it is a 2000 Audi S4 Quattro transmission =) (that's the one I helped my friend with). 3rd gear chirps are now do-able. Although I am gonna put 400 miles on the clutch before doing any real launching or hard shifts.
So, in summary, I HIGHLY recommend everyone get some Redline MT-90 (only comes in GL-4 I believe). I got it at Jockos for $10 a quart. You only need 2.5 qts for the transmission IIRC. Also, I found it much much easier if you don't take the drive shaft off the transmission. Disconnect it from the second part. That way when you have the transmission out, you can fill it a hell of a lot easier, and it won't all spill out the back where the drive shaft is. Anyway, that's my story, let me know any of you have had major problems doing this.
