clutch freeplay adjustment

Whats the scoop? I just put a used transmission and a new clutch in my 89'240sx. I never open the line to the hydraulic cylinder....so I expected that the freplay would be the same as it was before the transmission came out. Not what happened. Thereis no freeplay at all. The clutch engages at the very top of the pedal travel, and is defintely slipping. Do I still l need to try and bleed it, or what? I'm hoping some one can let me in on what to do here. Thanks....
