Hey guys, i recently picked up a new clutch/flywheel for my car and was just wondering if you guys have ever swapped them out urself and how long it took roughly?the shop that i've been dealing with normally quoted me about 5-6 hours which seems a little high imo... i could be wrong though..any input is appreciated!

my shop guy told me 3.5 hours. you're getting gauged badly.

it might take a novice 5-6 hours. make sure you have a transmission jack if you're on your own, and an extra set of hands.

i can do one on my own in about an hour and a half if i hustle and use air tools.

hardest part is getting the trans back on.

i did mine without transmission jack, if your not taking the flywheel off you can probably do the whole job with hand tools. tough part is taking the transmission off / putting on, you need a couple extensions and a u-joint.

Getting the trans out, the clutch off and back on is easy. Putting the trans back in by yourself is the crappy part...

haha. trans jack.

1. lay on your back.2. put trans on your chest.3. bench press-while-rotating the trans into place and hope to god the input shaft slides in.4. with 1 hand, balance trans, and with other, start threads of 2-3 bolts.5. climb out and get a drink.6. put on trans crossmember loosely7. tighten everything up

etc etc

clutch job books 4hours plus cost of fluids, resurfacing the flywheel, misc other charges like disposal and shop materials. I know its sounds stupid, but there are alot of little things that add up over a month that people that dont own shops or have to pay the over head think of. Shops are there to make money not serve as a charity help cause. if they charge reasonably and you trust them and there work why not help support them if you don't have the knowledge, time,or tools to do it.

i normally charge 250 plus resurfacing flywheel 45$ gear oil $$ depends on customer brand choice.

misc shop charges cover: locktite, rags, floor dry, fluid disposal, brake clean, and anything else that might get used during the job. you never think those things add up but do 3 clutchs a day for a month and tally those costs, it adds up.
