Im having a problem with my Clutch, every time i press the pedal and try to shift into gear, i can't get it in gear. I opened the hood, and looked for what could be the place to put clutch fluid, and it was empty. Im not sure if its for the clutch, it was next to the brake vacuum. Any ways, what kind of fluid do i have to use for the clutch?

ok noopz, firts if all if you have nay reservoir empty its a bad thing. you should try to tell me its location and ill tell you what it is.. ok the Master cylibnder (clutch fluid thing) is along the fire wall by the drivers side its next to the brake booster (Master cylinder) its a little reservoit compaered to all others..ok now as far as the Luquid that goes in there you might want to yse a Redline MT90, or mobil 1 75w-90. that should get you on your way. btw tell me how you got Redibne if you go that route i have no idea how to get that stuff...

well you should use dot 3 brake fluid which is much thinner than 75w-90 but if it worked then good for you. i work in a shop every day and have never heard of that but i guess you learn somthing new every day.

Yeah, using gear oil in the hydraulic lines.... never even thought about it! Just something about putting gear oil where there's no gears I guess.

well i guess any hydraulic fluid works for now but later down the road you might regret it. its almost like the old days when people put atf fluid in the power steering. and what do you know 30 years later atf its recommended in most new cars power steering today.

so that oil is no good for the clutch? should i bleed it, and get the right fluid? i dont think i did much damage, i was able to move the car and drive it aroun the block, something i wasnt able to do since last summer.

I have never heard of someone putting anything other that Brake Fluid in the clutch master cylinder...As long as what you use isnt corosive and wont freeze.. I assume motor oil will work.

Putting in other types of fluids tends to bust the seals.

ok this must be a joke... putting gear oil in a hydraulic clutch system? you swell out the seals & would eventually lead to master cyl, slave cyl, that stupid clutch damper seal, & the hose... might as well replace them all and thouroughly flush out the system w/ about 2 cans of brake fluid...

did you receive advice from a pepboy's employee?

I used parts cleaner to flush out my friends eclipse when he was told to use gear fluid. Seems to work pretty well. The "feeling" difference is, when you have gear fluid in there, there seems to be no pressure at all on the clutch pedal but it works. When we flushed it out and put in Dot3 brake fluid, the clutch pedal then feels like normal. Just thought I'd share this info with you guys.

some people are getting confused...you use gear oil in the actual manual transmission..where you fill by taking the shifter out...that's for the gears..hence..gear oil...then you have your clutch hyrdraulics...which use dot3 brake fluid..which is just typical hydraulic fluid...don't get them mixed up...dot3 fluid is too thin for the transmission.a.nd gear oil is too thich for the hydraulic lines..

Oh my gosh, I can't believe what I just read. You need to flush that gear oil out of there ASAP. Put in DOT 3 brake fluid. You also need to bleed the clutch line, not just fill it up. Do not wait around to do this, using gear oil in the clutch line is asking for MAJOR trouble!!!!!
