Over the summer my a/c auxiliary fan broke. I’m not sure what had happened, but by the time I realized what had happened 3 of the 4 supports had broke - this lead to the fan “kicking” into the mechanical fan shroud and the radiator when it turned on.
I opted to purchase a FAL 210 to replace the factory electric/mechanical fan setup. This package included a dual fan and adjustable controller for $240 (at summitracing.com). The setup was the perfect width. However, it required about 1 1/2” to be cut off of the bottom because it was too tall.
I had the controller set to a fairly low temp setting and I must say that over the summer the fan only came on once. This was while idling at a bank drive-through for 3-4 minutes. I didn't want to believe that the trend of using the a/c fan alone would be enough to cool the car, but now I must agree that that setup would probably work fine (at least for my situation). However, if I would have FI or live in a hotter area I would not want to relay on the a/c.
I must admit that I did not notice any gains in acceleration, throttle response, or mpg without the mechanical fan. I know in theory that removing weight/resistance off of the crank should have improved all of these things, but the effects just were not large enough to be noticed.
