So i'm on my way home just picking up my Z from the mechanic FINALLY, i'm about to turn into my corner when BOOOOM.... my clutch fan shaft shatters hurling the fan blade into my radiator ( :wtf2: FML I KNOW) so now i'm in the process of ordering an electric radiator fan set-up.........i was wondering if anybody else has a set-up like this or any advice

Thanks In Advance

I would go back to the stock mechanical setup, it's hard for an electric fan to provide the same amount of cooling as the stock fan+shroud.

If you insist on electric, make sure you get high quality, high cfm fan(s) with a good shroud.

might want to check your water pump shaft for play...fan clutch and water pump failures sometimes go hand in hand.

@robomatic i was thinking the same thing but i'm a little afraid of the shaft snapping again and also the shaft is broken so i don't think i would be able to replace it since they only sell the fan and the clutch itself

@es.biggs i'm taking the water pump off my other motor since the pulley got damaged in the ""explosion" so i don't know i'm still a bit confused

Sorry to hear man :( did your hood get messed up? I've seen this happen to a few cars and lots of times the hoods can get ruined.

@es.biggs yea a piece of the water pump pulley dented the hood upwards... and a piece of the fan was wedged in the radiator

@CrazedZ32Owner i never knew this could of happen either..... i thought i blew my motor cause all i saw was a spark and heard a BOOM so all i could of said was "S@%t F@#K" and among other vulgar words

It happens a lot more than you'd think man. Most cars today have electric fans which need 0 maintenance - that's why it's so unheard of.

now a friend of mines who has an electric fan on his Z said that he "hot-wired" his fan to his battery and to one of his fuses to give it power when the car is on, i was wondering if anybody else has a set-up similar to this or is everyone else running with their clutch fan?

He's probably using a relay...you can use a fuse tap to a fuse that only has power when the key is on, and use that to signal the relay.

Personally, I think it's easier, more reliable, and more effective to stick to the stock fan setup. E-fans have their advantages, but I haven't bothered switching. I actually have a fresh clutch on my fan because mine went bad not long ago (water pump too 5 days later) lol

dude if you are going to go with an E-fan kit just install it the correct way....i'd hate for the ghetto rigging to come undone and your car overheat... not fun believe me

Umm... if you were on your way back from your mechanic's shop... and the mechanic even slightly touched your fan/clutch/water pump/belts at all, I would make him pay for the repair. It's actually pretty common for people who don't know much about these cars to over/under tighten belts and bolts. I got a "tune up" on my NA a long time ago and the mechanic didn't make sure to have proper tension on the belts and a few miles down the road... boom all belts got shredded. As for the e-fan... keep the stock clutch fan and shrouds like everyone is saying.

2nd. This is not a common failure mode, something out of the ordinary caused it.

PROPER E-fan setups on NAs, with full shrouding, can be fine. I wouldn't chance it on a TT.

You can get a used fan clutch from classifieds or various members selling stuff. Even though it's not listed, this guy http://www.yugobernie.com/inventory.html may have a used fan clutch. You can get the fan by itself new as well.

Ahh good to hear. In the event of a relapse... go to another shop lol.
