Could be struts or the springs may not be seated properly if everything else checks out.

54325-ED02A strut bearings should fix your concern. Current service bulletin.

They changed my strut mounts last week....... same noise.

Now, my noise sounds more like "hitting a chunk of ice" when I mostly turn to the right.

Good luck!

Hey Guys,

I've just been around the world with this issue myself. I thought I would help anyone else out there so that they may not have to go through what I have.

I have a 2008 Hatch SL that did the same exact thing you (and others) are describing.

First I took it in and they checked the suspension and said no problem found.

I took it back a few weeks later and they had it for a couple weeks and replaced the entire steering rack.

Drove it two weeks no noise. After two weeks, the noise was back.

Took it back in they put new strut bearings in (per the service buliten).

No change, noise still there.

Took it to another dealer, they had car for two weeks.

They replaced the steering link (small shaft between steering rack and steering column with universal joints on both ends).

That fixed the problem and hjave not had it return yet.

I have talked with two others at this point that had that fix work for them as well.

Everyone I talked to that had the rack or the strut bearings replaced had the noise come back.

The dealer that correctly located the noise is in Columbia, TN. (BARR Motor Company Nissan or simply BARR Nissan).

Call their service department and ask to speak with the manager (James) and he can tell you all about it.

I have same issue. Went for a ride with tech and I suggested it might be lower steering joint. After an hour of troubleshooting they have ordered the entire rack.(Sound familiar)

Installation is tomorrow. I have a strong feeling I'll be back for the steering joint.

Yes, this has been covered many times before and I had the same issue with my 2008 V SL. They replaced the Steering Joint Assembly and that resolved the issue.

People who work at a car dealership always want to be right. They would probably replace the whole rest of the car before they ever listened to me if I had this problem. lol

I just get it to pop once or twice while leaving out of the driveway, almost sounds like something loose in the back trunk.

Cars is at dealership having rack installed today. The tech who was with me when I duplicated "pop" will be doing install. I made a point to service writer to have tech drive back to same location after new rack is installed to verify fix. I'll update.

Having had the same experience and reading through all of the clunking threads, it seems like there are two common issues with different fixes.

If the noise is a clunk when turning to the right, replacing the steering joint fixes it. This was my experience.

Others have reported a noise when going over bumps, and quite a few folks have said something with the strut bearing is the problem. I have not experienced this.

Good luck with yours. Multiple trips to the dealership can get very frustrating.

Ok Rack replaced. "pop" in steering has been greatly reduced but is still there intermittanly. Location where I was able to duplicate it almost every time near dealership, I could not after driving from dealers lot. After testing it over and over at different location I can make it happen once every 3 or 4X. Trouble now is I have to make it happen when I bring it back.

I must say it has improved. I can still feel popping if I hit the right bump at less than 5mph with wheel turned to the right. Im not bringing it back until it can be duplicated easily. Another member with a rack replacement had his popping return after 2 weeks.

Hi!, I have a 2007 Versa. I've noticed this problem from very early in ownership. The car makes a klunking niose when I'm turning to the right at low speed and the two surfaces that I am crossing are uneven. I have complained about it many times but could not get it to make the klunking noise for the dealership. Finally, a few weeks ago, the Tech that checked it out got it to make the same noise for him. They ordered an intermediate steering shaft and it is being installed today. I'll let you know if it helps!Take Care! Jeff

Strut bearing replaced........still klunking

Strut replaced.........still klunking

Intermediate steering shaft replaced...........still klunking but less noticeable but still there

I'm tired of going to the dealer. What the hell could be causing this. Gonna take it back again in a few weeks and see what happens. Thankfully I have a great dealer and they have been very helpful.

I took mine in for these same symptoms and there were two technical bulletins they found to address this issue. They replaced the upper strut bearings and intermediate steering shaft. Car drives great with no noises, but now the steering wheel is off center, so will need to take it back to correct that.

Was reading up on this article. My daughter bought a 2009 Versa SL Hatch and is expierencing a noise aswell.
Anyone! Is this clunking noise sound like the "coil springs" making a 'klong or poing" noise when turning or going over a bump? Was thinking the strut bearings aswell but I could be wasting my money.

Hi...first of all, thank you for posting this information. I'm experiencing the same noise in my 2008 Versa S Hatchback with only 68k on it. I just bought this car last year and have noticed it ever since. The dealer, since I have a powertrain warranty through them, said it was the right front CV axle and it was replaced. Noise was gone, but came back. Then recently, they said that I had to get front spring coil insulators to get rid of the noise. Well after reading these posts, I'm glad I didn't follow their recommendation. I was wanting to confirm has anyone else had any recurring problems after the steering link was replaced with a universal joint on both ends? Also, how much did that cost for that repair? My dealer charges $99.95 an hour, so in case this isn't covered under my powertrain warranty, i'm gong to need to find a lower cost alternative. Thank you! Paul
