OK...

I have this clunking noise coming from my rear end...It only occurs under abrupt braking, or from slow speed acceleration.

I believe I read that it could be worn out subframe bushings?? Will subframe inserts solve this problem?? If so which would you recommend, I really like the ones from Whiteline on the PDM site...any tried these??

I had the same problem, and it turned out to be my jack. It wasn't tightened down and it would rock forward on braking and make a clunk, then rock backward on accelerating and make a clunk. It is low tech, but might be your problem.

It could be from the subrame loading and unloading during the weight shift causing a clunk. You really should investigate further as it may be the rear diff. bushings.

If you decide to go with the subframe spacers, we offer a better alternative to the polyurethane units. We also are a NICO sponsor, (banner not up yet cause I've been sick :( )

Constructed out of T6 aluminum for increased durability, increased performance, and they even look better :)

We have many sets in stock, and our price is $94 shipped to your door. You can call me on Monday to place an order by phone at (1-866-SPL-PART) or you have the option of placing your order via our website (http://www.splparts.com) using our paypal basket located next to the item.

I have the same problem... except mine is a clattering coming from the trunk area EVERY time I hit a bump. I took everything out of my trunk, and that made it worse. So it has got to be coming from under the car.

So do you think your subframe spacers would fix this problem?

(not trying to hyjack your thread, my problem sounds similar, maybe the solution to my problem could help)

Noises in the rear are sorta hard to diagnose from an internet perspective. I'm familiar with the different kinds of knocks, bumps, pings, and other noises that come from the back of a 240.

However, the main problem I have for your case, Pills, is that when you hit a bump you are compressing everything in the rear, shock, spring, subframe, control arm bushings, differential bushings, etc. and in the ever aging 240, there usually is alot of old worn out componentry that can cause such a noise.

So honestly I have to rely on your personal best judgement. By that I mean, I can't guarantee these are a "fix-all" product. I don't want to confuse anyone into thinking that, the best method is to have a look under the car yourself and ask more questions, email them to me if you wish and I'll give a best guess possible. The last thing I wanna do is sell someone something they don't need or want.

In conclusion, the spacers aren't a bushing replacement they are a bushing upgrade. I mean this in the fact that if you look at your subframe mounting locations you'll see gaps where the bushings are. These collars slide into those gaps and compress the stock rubber bushing making it act much more solid. It's an upgrade worthy on it's own right and it is quite pronounced, I'd rate it better than a rear strut bar in terms of feel and it does help to reduce wheel hop by a fair amount I must add.

SPL...Sounds good. I will give you a call. I have looked under the car, and have ruled out the diff bushings. They look solid, with no gaps/worn looking bushings.

pills, check the metal bars that are right underneath your rear deck... they act as springs for the trunk. mine got bent in my S14 and they rattled all to hell.

it could also be that your spare is not tightened down all theway.

btw, is that the puppet from Flat beat in your avatar?
