so i've had this clunk noise/feel going on in my 88' ss since i bought it and its starting to worry me.it happens when i shift out of and into gears normally above 3 grand or when there is great loadi've had it looked at while i had it in a shop to fix the fuel gauge and the tech said it could be something to do with the rear suspension (something to do with the springs). he noted my u joints were sound but there was a bit of movement in the driveshaft. he said they had one tech put his hand over the shock towers(dunno what to call them) in the back while he made the car squat with the ebrake on and that was where most of the noise was. now i tried this myself witha friend and there does seem to be allot of movement under there, but i dunno if thats the huge clunk i feel throughout the car. any suggestions on what this could/couldnt be?

Could be the shocks, could also be the rear subframe bushings. I don't know how you would test them, other than inspecting them, and boucing the car around while you look & feel the different parts.

I have a bad RR shock (hear it only over bumps, when car warms up and I can feel a bit of a 'click' from the top of the strut when I bounce the car. I think I also have bad subframe bushings (same symptoms you are describing). I decided it wasn't worth the trouble for my rust bucket.
