Just got a close look at an RS6 at the Audi Club's track event at Summit Point Raceway. Interesting car but not for the light walleted. I sat in it but did not get to drive it.The Chief Instructor got the honor of driving it on the track as the owner was a novice.

Some interesting tidbits I learned for those that are interested, besides the twin turbo V8 and that it's so stinkin' big

The Sunroof has a solar panel built into it which powers a ventilation system to keep the car cool when parked in the sun.

It has 18" wheels with Z rated rubber, and they look small!

It's 10 quart crankcase requires a special synthetic oil available only via Audi and costs $21 per quart. Can't go to Pep Boys and dump something else in without voiding the warranty. So an oil change is $210 before the filter and labor.

The engine compartment is so crammed, the battery was relocated to the ernormous trunk.

The cover that keeps the dust off the top of the engine is carbon fiber, which is unexpected because the car is over 2 tons. Kinda like ordering a a Big Mac, super sized fries with a diet coke. Just seems a bit odd.

Very comfortable car, but I'm not a big paddle shift fan, which this has. Interior seems straight out of an A-6. Very cool car overall. The price including tax, tags, etc, was $95K out the door. Any takers?

Oh, there was just one other Nissan at the Audi event representin' besides mine. A race prepared NX. Car had won the Valvoline Runoffs in the early 90's. Neat car. Other Japanese cars included one very quick RSX, a few Eclipses, a couple of stock 2.5rs's and WRX's, one stock Evo, and a race prepared Mitsu VR4. Very nice. No honduh's, no 240sx's. no STi's this time. The most amusing car there was a guy that brought a PT cruiser.

man, that special oil thing sounds pretty lame, I don't think I'd much care to own that unless I was totally loaded with money.

was the paddle shift that of an automatic or an SMG?

I agree. As with most new VW products they are designed for the owner to do ALL of his/her servicing/repairs with the dealer instead of a private mechanic. This is a scary car to own like a Porsche 928. Eventually it will become affordable to buy, but the new owner will quickly learn they are unreasonably expensive to keep.

For me it's a must drive car, not a must own.

According to the Audi guys, there is no SMG type dual clutch Audi transmission that can handle the RS6's torque....yet. I believe RS6 has a modified tiptronic. The car also has a floor shift where you can put it in full auto mode and can slip the shifter to the right to use it as a traditional tiptronic. The paddles are hard to resist, though. Audi is not going to offer a manual in the US, which stinks

my experiences driving tip tronic transmissions have been very disappointing, all the ones I've driven (3 maybe) still shift like an automatic. On a car of that caliber, you'd think they would've made a manual transmission an option, same goes for the Mercedes.

As far as the new super sedans go, I'm thinking the upcoming CTS-V will probably be the most owner friendly being that it's derived from the Z06 and also a small block chevy. It's also the cheapest, but still a GM so who knows how it's gonna turn out.

My wifes last car had a tiptronic. I got bored quickly with it andkept it mostly in auto mode. The Audi's tiptronic mods supposedly make the shifts much quicker than before. We'll see.

Until GM starts using better materials I don't see them swaying that many super sedan owners away from the german or top shelf Japanese makes. GM is still fighting a perception battle even if their reliability record for some models currently looks better than many German marques.

The oil may cost a lot but I bet it lasts longer than conventional oil.

*shrug*

...and if you can afford the RS6 then I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem affording the oil. Same case for Ferrari F40/F50 owners, IIRC.

that's what I say

I bet you could almost get a nice used 360 Modena for the cost of the RS6 though. Who needs an Audi when I could have a bright yellow car with a prancing pony on the hood...

I am so ready to be a rap star other than that talent thing...

I'm thinking the CTS-V might sway some of the super sedan folks being as it's barely over 50k and offers some great performance though.

all the Z06 owners I've talked to seem to like the cars a lot so maybe GM won't botch this one...

I hope you're right about the CTS-V, I'd like to see GM do well, but Z06 owners are not a good polling group. How many 350z owners are gonna tell you the Infiniti G35 sucks?

$50,000 puts in the same class as an A6 Quattro, the Bimmer 5 series, and Infiniti Q. I'm sure the vette motor will match up well, but I suspect the fit/finish and cheaper materials GM uses will make it a more difficult sale when put up against one those similarly priced and sized cars. I think GM has Caddy going in the right direction, and gaining some ground but they are still behind their competitors.

You can also buy a Ferrari Testarossa for less than an RS6. But when you find out that the 30,000 mile scheduled service costs over $20,000, it may not be such a bargain.

I would give my left nut for an Audi RS6. By the way bubba, how did the car perform on the track?
