I dont know how long this has been going on, but I noticed it for the past few days, as its been temperate enough for meto have the windows.

Anyway, what happens is, for instance, when I shift into reverse, it makes this clicking noise. It shifts perfect, no delay, no harshness, nothin. But it makes this thing, almost as if something is being sucked up, like a suction cup off a window. It also will do it when I hit the gas right after a shift.... IE I shift, it clicks, then I gun it, and it clicks again...

If anything the click happens as the shift is ending.....

check the universal joints for play and the bolts at each end of the driveshaft.

Thanks texasoil.

However, it does sound like its coming from the transmission, and not from something as far back as the Ujoints...

loose bell housing bolts? loose rear mount? look external first.

Well those 2 things would seem to me some sort of vibration that happens all the time. I dont know if I made this clear, but it only does it RIGHT aftter the FIRST shift. IE if I shift into drive, it only does it when I hit the gas RIGHT after that. After that no clicky...

loose bolts will usually 'shift' when torsional strain as placed on the parts they hold together. If you have had the transmission out or the rear mount replaced,or driveshaft removed--recheck all those bolts. They do not flop around if just loose enough to allow a shift. It may even be an exhaust pipe shifting at a joint. Also check engine mounts. It's unlikely to be inside the transmission--if it is, hold on and get ready for replacing it. Worn clutch pack holders (the driven drum) can sometimes bind on the clutch plates and shift when torque is applied--but that is not likely the cause of the noise.

The transmission shifts FLAWLESSLY (or rather shifts really good, no worse than the day I bought it). Do you really think this is osmehting that should be addressed, or does it really matter??

I'm not familiar with the mechanics on a G50. So this may or may not help. Do G50's have rear engine mounts???

My old Audi made a clicking noise when I use to put it in reverse, I thought it was coming from the transmission, but the transmission shifted fine.

Later on I found out that the rubber padding on the rear engine mount had detriorated and when I use to put it in reverse the engine would essentially "wiggle" due to a different load creating a clicking noise. Changing the rubber pads got rid of my clicking.

I think TexasOil is offering sage advice. It would be wise to heed it first to eliminate external causes.

Could also be a rear diff going south, as that sond will make itself known further forward.

But my $ is on texasoil's diagnosis.

My diff is in good shape as far as I can tell (when I floor it inthe rain, TCS off, both wheels spin equally).....

I will get under the car one of these days and investigate it...... The more I think about it, it COULD be the U joints, i listened to it and Ill look exactly where they are, cant remember off han.d

Could be you brake pads. They move slightly when you reverse & then again when you go forward.

Wes....sounds are a real b!itch to find as I had a vibration from the installation of my new transmission that nobody could figure out where it was coming from. Drove me nuts for 3 weeks and I took it back to them 3 times with no luck and even I could not find the problem and we put it on a rack where the tires supported the car...not the frame. After the installation of my new exhaust...no more vibrations. Somehow they did not hook up the exhaust correctly after the transmission

It doesnt really bother me that much (at all), i just want to know if its something I should deal with, and it sounds somewhat harmless...

The brake noise is common in a lot of vehicles, especially older ones. My Q does it sometimes & it isn't a problem.Get someone to drive you car forward & reverse to make the noise, while you stand next to the wheel, & get a better idea of where it's coming from.

Also make sure the Driveshaft mounting bolts are tight, all of them, including the centre bearing.

Check the bolts on the transmission mount and the flex disk. gotta be tight.

I hear a somewhat similar sound in my 93Q. Definitely sounds like the transmission. Have checked externally with no luck. It sounds almost like a small pebble flowing around in the trans. I have changed fluid and filter twice and the sound is still there. trans works fine otherwise.

Have the same noise. I just overhauled my transmission & it's still there. I suspect it's in the engine. It seem to be doing no harm but if you find that noise, let me know. :D

I don't think it's the U joints since the noise occurs even when the vehicle is stationary.

Ujoint or loose bolts on coupling (or dry center spline)will make a 'click' when driveshaft rotation torque is reversed WHEN STOPPED.

Could also be bell housing bolts loose, but unlikely since there is a 'locating' dowel pin in the joint.

Just a thought, my wheel covers will click when changing temperature & also when I'm just taking off, slowly. I was near the car the other day & the sun hit the rims & they started clicking. Really weird, but true. The plastic centres obviously change size quicker than the alloy rims.

Obviously not the wheel (plus I don't have wheel covers). I thought about heat shield missing and giving off the sound of heat being radiated. I am also warming to the possibility of something in the eng. oil pan. The sound can best be characterized as a small pebble or metal trapped in a confined area that is being washed around within that limited space.

You could be describing a failing catalytic converter, possibly... Marbles in a box...

Does it make the noise only when the transmission is in gear and the car stopped or moving very slowly? If so, sounds like either debris or a failed bearing in the torque convertor. A stator rub allowed by a loose/failed bearing will make that sound.

Loose bolts will only make a single 'pop/click' when the torque direction reverses, not a series of rattles. U-Joints will also make a rattling/popping/clicking sound as the driveshaft rotates, but not while standing still.

If the car makes the sound only when moving, but not when standing, it narrows it to the driveshaft joints and end connections most likely. A failed bearing on the transmission mainshaft will make noise, but self destruct in rather short order.

Yesterday night I drove my car for the 3rd time after the rebuild and on the way home I heard a noise coming from the rear.. sounded like back in the hatch area... it sounded like a playing card taped to a bicycle tire that was going really fast down a hill or somethin... anyway, when I slow down and come to a stop, the noise doesn't stop immediately, but maybe a couple seconds after I stop.. I thought it could be the driveshaft. As I slowed down in the neighborhood, I could hear the noise very clearly and it was kinda loud (it was echoing off of the houses around me) Tomorrow, i'm going to jack the rear up and let it run in first gear .. maybe i'll hear exactly where it's coming from... god I hope i dont have to take the transmission off

Would anyone be willing to say that the teeth from the flywheel have broken and are just rattling in the transmission....i have had this similar issue in mine since it got back up and running....

thank god that wasn't the problem... thanks for your advice/thoughts...well I was inspecting underneath the car and found that a huge zip tie had moved around when the driveshaft was installed and was whipping on my ebrake cable thingie like a weedeater.. there was a metal part on the ebrake cable and it was coming loose so that's what made the strange noise.
