I was driving to work the other day and shifted into 5th and my transmission started clicking very loudly. It doesnt click in any other gears only 5th. I decided to change the gear oil in my transmission thinking it might help. There was a small metal shard that came out when i drained the oil. Nothing changed so i put my t-case in neutral then put it in fifth and it still clicked very loudly. Does anybody know what this is? (84 datsun 720 4x4)

You probably lost a bearing in the transmission, I would not drive it till you get it fixed, it could destroy the transmission if it explodes.
I have had a bearing come out of its race and get caught in between the cluster gear shaft and the main shaft, it broke the cluster gear shaft where 5th was, the transmission is scrap now.

I am not saying that is what it is for sure.
It's strange that it does it only in 5th, what about reverse?
The cluster gear shaft has 2 bearings, one is in the front of the transmission, the other is back by the 5th/rev gears.

No reverse is just fine. Someone said i might be missing a tooth in 5th gear so im probably just gonna pull it out and take a look at.

Did you check the u-joints in the short drive line between the transmission and the T-case?
Did you check the bolts holding that short drive line in position?
Did the metal shard look like a gear tooth or the thin metal that holds bearings apart in a bearing?
