Can anyone tell me WHY if motorex has supposedly crash tested every TYPE of skyline they sell, it's not legal for any other dealership to sell those skylines as legal cars in the US? I mean the TYPE of the car has been through crashtesting, shouldn't that make all of the SAME types of cars be able to legally be sold in the US? DO you knwo what I mean? I hear alot about how nobody else does the crash testing, etc so Motorex is the only one who can sell "street legal in 50 states" Skylines. But if they already DID the crashtesting, and the cars are approved for sale in the US, why can't someone else import them if its the SAME type of car?

Excellent point. I would like to know the same thing. Perhaps to be accepted as a whole, the cars must be test crashed by the Nat' highway people. Otherwise maybe its on a per business basis?

I dont know this for sure, but I think Motorex is listed as the mfg of Skylines in the US. Its no longer a Nissan Skyline, but a Motorex Skyline. From the DOT's point of view, there was no such thing as a Skyline until Motorex said "hey we have this new car we want to certify." Once a Motorex Skyline is legalized (crash tested, emission tested, etc), it can be bought or sold like a regular car. I believe Nissan wouldve had to go thru this same process if they had decided to sell Skylines here.If you bring a R34 over from Japan, the DOT looks at it and says Nissan Skylines arent legal. But if your neighbor sells you his R34 he bought from Motorex, the DOT leaves you alone cause its a Motorex (fully tested/inspected) Skyline.I think the McLaren F1 was sold here in the same way by a company called Ameritech.

I was reading about last year's "one lap of america" tour and they said there is an importer in chicago that is bringing in skylines, and he drove one in last year's OLA.

Yeah, this question gets brought up a few times a year. Hit the nail on the head earlier, Motorex owns the rights to the Skyline crash data, cause they paid to have 3 of each type they sell tested (oof... that'd be painful to watch)... if someone else were to wreck 3 of their own they could do the same, claiming that the Skyline is now the (for instance) Ninja Skyline, rather than Nissan, because you, the owner of Ninja Motors Corp. brought the legal vehicle over. Gar! I WILL own a GT-R (or a dozen) some day...
