I didn't want to jack this thread (the proper way to do this people).
vinyl-on-dash-beginning-to-crack-t566005.html

Greglb brought up this tint he has prestige pr70 from 3M that's supposed to be a clear tint ("virtually"). I want to tint my windshields because the sun burns up my hand, and my right arm depending on how I position it. I went to their site and didn't see this as clear, the lowest grade I saw was 40%.

I found this tint by llumar and its amazing. (it's unbelievable that a news station doesn't know the basics to actually state the name of the tint that they are raving about)

Which seems really amazing, especially since its crystal clear and provides better protection than the limo tint...which I'm quite sure is a very cheap brand in order to drive the point and give a wow factor. I'm just curious if anyone has come across cheaper CRYSTAL clear tint that offer such heat reduction. Or if anyone has used the clear llumar, and if so how much did you get it for?

It isnt clear, but you could go with some Huper-Optik tint which is a special nano-ceramic that blocks something stupid like 90% of heat. it was originally designed and used for the space shuttles to protect from the heat on re-entry to the atmosphere. If you go with the lightest tint you can it wont hardly be any different looking but will block all the heat you want.

To get your whole car done with this will cost about $650.

EDIT: here is the page specifically for cars:

I'm not sure of the actual 'name' of the tint on my front windscreen. I had it done whilst getting the side and rear windows tinted. I went to a national shop called "Tint World'. They have a huge machine that pre-cuts the tint using computerized templates for each window of any vehicle. Thye total bill was about $350 for all the windows + the rear windscreen + the special tint on the front windscreen. I believe it was $200 for the front windscreen alone, but I got a discount as I was having the other 6 windows and the rear windscreen tinted. It is 100% clear (no distortion, when looking out from inside, colours outside the car look the same as with the naked eye .... but is NOT 100% colourless. You have to look extremely close to the area that is cut out for the lane departure camera to see the difference, but it is perhaps one tiny tweek away from colourless.
The dash never heats up. Even the inside surface of my windscreen is not hot to the touch after sitting for hours in 90 degree FL sun. Since the dash (and A/C vents) don't get hot, the A/C begins to cool the car in seconds. After starting the car in direct sunlight, the car is well cooled before the RPMs decrease to normal idle speed (I wait for that before setting off from the driveway).

****** HELPFUL INFO: If you get the rear windscreen tinted, do NOT, do NOT, get 'limo' tint !!! It messes with the auto-dimming rear view mirror and it makes it bloody hard to see anything through it even in daylight. Go 1shade weaker than limo tint ( I had all windows done with this weaker shade to avoid problems seeing through them at night). My mirror works great and I can see very clearly out the rear even at night, but you can't see inside the car from outside.

I should have looked into this instead of the 50% I have on my windshield now.

I was originally going to do 70% 3M black tint, but they had none in stock and I didn't want to wait. I opted for 50% since they were able to show me an example of another car.

Yes, it is dark since the rest of my windows are 20%.

Visibility looking out is fine during the day, but at night it is terrible. To add, my car is dropped and the headlights are facing even further down and I can't see ahead at all. If you add rain to the mix......I won't even drive my car....

I should have gone with this option instead or waited for the 70%.

At least my car looks cool and bad a**?

I thought I posted this before but can’t find the thread…I did 70% on the front windshield on my 07 E Class….the exterior and interior color was black, the tint on the other windows were Limo (rear window), 35%(I think) on the rear doors, light on the driver/pass doors, so the car kept cool. the visibility was great and facing the west in the afternoons (while driving on the fwy) wasn’t bad…it reduced the glare and blocked enough sun/heat while the car was parked. I've yet to do it on the M..

here’s a few pix…you can compare the front windshield to the driver door (tinted) and the other window rolled down.

hope this helps…my local tint shop did the job — not expensive.

50 Percent windshield
20 percent all other windows

Should have gotten clear like OP suggested.

For heat reduction, the Huper-Optik material is the absolute best. :dblthumb: Lots of people in hot climates (like Arizona) use it very effectively.
