Hey guys,

I've been trying to find the thread where someone brought up the idea to spray clear plastidip on the tail lights then spray tail tint. That way if it starts to get bad or you get pulled over you can just peel it off.

Well I went ahead and tested it out with our Nico pal Elevate and here are the results

I noticed that trying to peel off the tints dont exactly PEEL, but you can take it off by rubbing it back n forth with your thumb or maybe using a credit card. But it works and its much cheaper and hassle free. I used 3 coats of Clear Plastidip and 1 coat of tint.

If anyone tackles the GT-R mod, I used vinyl to make the hole and spray over it. However, I cut the hole a little too big (6'' to be exact) and it looks kinda weird so my advice would be to cut a hole thats maybe 5 1/2'', maybe smaller.

And spray much further away....it'll run =)

Looks nice, but I'm still a huge fan of Lamin-X film.

The thing about using Lamin-X film (assuming thats a vinyl) is that not only could it be used once, but it looks like a pain in the neck to put on.

I just put on Oracal 8300 color code 173. HUGE pain in the a** to apply but worth it.

Plastidip looks almost tacky? Like its textured?

Yea, it doesnt really have a smooth surface which Im not too crazy about but can live with. So there are pros and cons to doing this.

thanks for trying it out! i have put this on my to do list but just havent gotten around to it still, due to school and such.

perhaps you can use a high grit sandpaper and sand it smooth?
i know one can use that method on just a plain VHT coating to get a high gloss finish

also, i would plan on doing the GTR stylling on the tailights. how did you keep the brake and reverse lights clear? from personal experience using plastidip, the edges of the plastidip would start to peel real easily if anything besides cutting was done to em. and i definitely wouldnt want to risk scratching my the taillights with an exacto knife or an equivalent.

What I did Chinaman was I bought a roll of vinyl at an arts supply store, and i simply traced a circle using a cereal bowl, which ended up being too big in my opinion so like i said, try making it under 6 inches.

As for the reverse light, if you look at it, its not a perfect circle, more ovalish. If you run your fingers lightly across the revere light you can feel a small line circling it. So for that I got a piece of tracing paper and with the side of a pencil I shaded the paper, leaving the outline of the circle. Then placing the paper over the vinyl using it as a stencil, I poked wholes on the line with a pin, making the circle on the vinyl.

You can also half a.ss it and just use a smaller circle too ;)

they look better in person guys!!, of course if you want a glossy finish just go with vinyl. i think this method adds a unique look because of the texture. :dblthumb:

I don't know which type of vinyl you guys use, but I used a plastic like vinyl (not tint) to blacken the taillights and it has a matte finish!

well again I didn't use vinyl to black out the tails, I used it just to make the hole cut outs. I sprayed mine

^Bro...

I had my tail lights that dark for quite a while. You will regret it when you try to change lanes on the GSP during the day, the person next to you cant see your blinker, and you wreck. You have stock filament bulbs or LEDs?

This is what mine looks like with the Oracal film. They are "chrome" smoked LED tails. The film obviously wont look the same on a red lens, but thats why I bought the chrome smoked ones. All lights are completely visible at all times of the day.
