Like you did, I would recommend using something that will
not slide in too far into the nozzle and become unable to remove. So, something bent - like the bobby pin you mention, and can be gripped relatively easily, is fine.
For me, I found that a larger safety pin (i.e., the "hook closing" kind, but bent apart further) will work pretty well too.
Basically, what you have to be careful of is not to use something too large - you don't want to force it in and make the nozzle opening too large. This would make the liquid stream lose velocity - it might not reach the windshield at speed.
