I have tried various wire brushes but the rust is very hard to get rid of. I haven't tried spraying some evaporust on it yet because I am running low on it.
Does anyone have any tips for cleaning up the diff cases?
And one side flange has some play in it, Yet the other one has no play in it. Is that normal? It was dropped from a height of 2 feet...

My concern on dropping it would be did it bend a flange? I have two spare diffs and some play is normal. Are you talking back and forth play or side to side? As far as cleaning it sand blast it, or bead blast it. Gut it first of course.

What I have trouble understanding is how would one remove the side flanges without the special tool called a axle stand. I can borrow a sliding hammer and make the drifts from pieces of pipe. But somehow getting a sliding hammer to grab the side flange is beyond me. And without those out then nothing further that can be done.

As usual I feel like a idiot...
I thought of using some rope and a crow bar to get the side axles off. That didn't work well. Then I found some throttle cable (Bike cable) and they came off!!!
Now to get a sliding hammer and take off the ring gear!!!
I also notice the bearing caps are a little pitted which can't be good? Can they be resurfaced?
Man I wish they sold the viscous coupling separate and cheaper than the cost of a couple of used diffs.
I also feel I should replace the rubber bushings (Isolators) but I know they are not sold separate as well...Any ideas?
What about color? polished diff cover with a POR-15 painted diff case?

I got it all apart. So far the only things that need to be done is cleaning the stuff and putting it back with fresh oil. And of course still clean the case.
