I would not use gasoline, too messy too volatile and it is the properties of today's gas that you want to remove. Bad for your lungs. CV, wipe down with rags or paper towel then remove, then clean using solvent like cheaper varsol, then clean off with brake cleaner, examine joints for wear, shattered parts, upon re-assembly pack with a good grade grease at recommended amounts, be sure to do a partial fill of the boots on assembly, assemble everything in order and tie the boots at the end and be sure you use OEM boots and no other. Otherwise you will be doing it again. The boots need to be flexed over the total distance, be sure to tie down at the proper place then measure the length and verify with the manual.
