i know these topics have been talked about like 235235 times, and i have already performed a search on them, but im not finding any specific information that can help me step by step. Sorry to those who get pissed.

I want to know how to clean my MAF and EGR (that's what i heard relates to most of the problems with 240s) on my 95 SE because my car runs slightly rough on idle. My car also has 201,000 miles

MAF ---------------------------------------------------------------------------I have changed my intake to a cold air intake and im pretty sure that the MAF is the small black box that connects to the air filter right?? What materials would I need to clean this properly and how do I do it?

EGR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have never seen the EGR, don't know where it is and dont know how to clean it. This may be something that needs to be cleaned as well as a lot of people are doing it. Can someone tell me where it is, what i need to clean it and how to do it? It would be much appreciated. Thanks

MAF cannot be cleaned or run the risk of damaging its internals.

EGR just used a heavy parts cleaner and a scraper to get the carbon off. Get a new gasket before you clean the EGR.

chem-tool carb cleaner is the best carbon buster i know you spray it in the egr passages and allow it to soak for awhile then poke and prod at it till it starts coming out. the egr is the gold lookin saucer with a vaccum line attached to it at the rear of your intake manifold. not the saucer with 2 vac lines to it that is your BPT which controls the supply vaccum to the egr by means of exhaust back pressure.

you have to remove the one with one vaccum line to it and spray into the intake port where it was attached.

Nistech can you clarify something for me... the BPT valve is the one thats mounted onto the TB with two bolts? it has two small hoses coming out the top at 90' angles, with one larger hose going in the bottom?

And the EGR.. is the gold disc thats further below and slightly towards the firewall with one hose going in the top, and one coming out the bottom??

my BPT is COMPLETELY clogged, and im betting my EGR will be too.. should I just buy new ones? and you said to replace the "filter"??

Thanks

yes on both counts you are correct. but if both are clogged you are likely going to need to clean the intake of the carbon build up as well. you can probably save the egr if you soak it with carb clean(take care not to get it on the egr diaphram. the BPT is most likely a loss. I went through this thread and I dont see where I mentioned a filter???

I have had great luck cleaning my MAF with brake parts cleaner...

Just hold the can about 6in from it, and spray away.. Dont let anything like a towel touch it.. Spray from both sides..

This is the accepted procdure for the Infiniti guys.....

Does teh EGR and BPT cleaning help smooth out idle problems?

Also note on teh MAF I have also heard lots of places that TB and Intake cleaner or Brake cleaner will work fine on the maf...

its not recommended to use chemicals to clean it as it can burn it up when it is active. But guys here do do it with sucess. So if the risk of completely frying it doesnt bother you have at it:D

You just gotta make sure its been off for a little while and dont start it up for a while...... I personally dont see any risks involved if you use your head!!!
