I am doing a full timing chain job, and just got the oil pan and pickup off yesterday. The area where the oil pickup sits had lots of chain guide bits (both plastic and metal) in it. There was hardly anything blocking the oil pickup itself. The pan was coated in a layer of fairly thick sludge. I washed all of the bits of chain guide out , and filled the pan up with gas to dissolve the sludge. After an hour I dumped the gas out and let any remaining evaportate overnight.
This morning all of the sludge was gone and the pan was clean enough to eat off of, but much of it has now rusted. What should I do to the rust on the inside of the pan? I have a can of naval jelly and duplicolor engine enamel. Can I use this paint on the inside of the pan, or should I just remove the rust and coat it with oil? I really don't want to take a chance of the paint flaking and clogging my oil pickup.
