cleaning my engine bay..help!!

ok guys i am cleaning everything i dont need out of the engine bay. I was looking at it last night and i have a little black box setting on the drivers side and from what i can tell it looks like it is emissions related. Do i need this or can i take it out? also has anyone had any problems lining there engine up? just trying to get a ruff idea about time its going to take to get it in
